Hey guys, been lurking around for a bit, reading and attempting to learn somthing... testing the waters so to speak, I got myself a basic reloading kit last weekend and plan to load for three cartridges . I would love to find a powder that will work in all three. Im going to be loading some .223rem for my XCR, 308 for my M14 and some 45-70 for my new GBL. I seen that H4895 is listed for all three of these, I understand it "may not be "best" for any of them but at the moment, I would rather not deal with various powders. I read that H4895 is a little on the slow side for the 45-70, any once have some insight? Also, the hodgdon site lists different primers for the 45-70 and the 308. is there a Primer I can safly use in both?

Go buy a couple current reloading manuals, and get reading.

Although a desirable situation being able to use one propellant amungst 3 different cartridges, your facing long odds to get optimal results with only one propellent.

For primers, just get large rifle, any brand you want, and use them in all three cartridges.
 
H4895 would a good powder for all 3. I have used a lot of it for 308 and 223 and for 45-70 use powder only one step faster.

Starting out as a new loader, keep life simple with one powder.

In a year you will be like the rest of us, with lots of powders you have tried.
 
powders are the spice to life! i think i have 12 different powders on hand, just keep them sorted and do no mix!
 
wow, thanks for all the info so soon guys. I realize that one powder for three cartridges isnt the best situation, and each load/rifle combination will need to be taylored, for right now i need to concentrait on building some basic skill sets. having to organize different powers and primers just adds to it. I have one other question, I had found this info on hear once but apparently my search function skills are lacking. Its recomended that reloads for the m14 should have a "hard" primer, but I also read that soem of them are also a magnum and not suited for use in this application...which primer do i need to use?
 
DO NOT TRY TO USE LARGE RIFLE PRIMERS IN YOUR 223... Not that it's dangerous, because for once in our lives...she aint gunna fit.

You need Small Rifle Primers (SR Primers) for the .223, I like the winchester ones in the blue box. Havn't failed me yet.
 
H-335 will work in all three as well.
Might be a bit "blasty" out of the .308, but I've had some luck with it in 30-06.

is a Lee, H-335 might leak out of the powder measure.
Lapping it might help.
It meters really nicely in other measures, though.
