I just returned from shopping (more like drooling) at Bass Pro in Vaughan Mills mall, Vaughan , ON. They had a racked Marlin 336Youth that I asked to see (after showing my PAL). :D

Wow, was that rifle ever nice and short. Add a longer buttstock and one will have a super short handy carry bush-pushin' carbine!

The metal work looked bead blasted and blued, the stocks were laminated wood strips (reminds me of Boyd's stocks), but the length was so suh-weet!

How's Remlin's production QC these days? Have they smartened up from the 2009/2010 goofiness over the past few years?

Might be my next deer gitter.... $ 449.00 at Bass Pro, $ 455.00 at Epps in Orillia! :D

Cheers,

Barney

I was lovenly fondling a 16" marlin trapper - ? (not sure what Marlin call them) at our local gun store until I realized the front sights were drilled off center & the action felt like it was full of sand.Kind of disapointed as Marlin had such a good name and for good reason.I so wanted to drop the cash on that rifle as i love the short lever rifle but dam what a piece of sh*t

There is a Marlin QC thread on the forums from a few months ago if you have a look back.

I bought a 2012 Marlin 336C (30-30 Win) last year.
Fit and finish is good, accuracy is good, shoots well. I like it a lot. To me it is a keeper.
The action was a little tight and rough but not too bad. After a few cycles it will smooth out.
I ran snap-caps through mine for 100+ cycles and put a 20 box through it.
I am going to give it a disassemble and action polish one of these days just to make it silky since I won't be putting yearly cases of rounds through it.
I can't speak for the Y model, but I like my C.

I sure like my 35Rem Marlin Marauder trapper made in the 60s. Previous owner in Michigan accounted for about 40 deer and I shot a decent bear in 2011 with it. In the woods it's a winner I think - handy to carry and perfect up in a cramped treestand. It's the fore runner to the 336Y but with the adult length walnut butt stock.

That 'adult' length buttstock approach is what I was thinking about! Nice short carbine for the stand or ground blind! yahooo

I also like the idea of cycling the action hundreds of times to smooooooth things out, just like our M14 Norcs (badly in need of refined smoothing out).

Cheers,
Barney

I have a Rem made Y befor the laminated stock. It is great, fit and finish good and slick as S@#&. Real slick now that i polished it and did the trigger. I also added a thicker recoil pad to add a inch to the buttstock. Im very happy with it and have hundreds of reloads through it.

People are reporting 2012 production year to be quite good and reliable. Gotta be 2012 production though. I think the serial number would have strart with 88*****

I fondled one of the youth models before Christmas and was very tempted to jump on it as well.

I actually like the short stock - a few decades of hunting in colder climates with heavy cold weather clothing has given me an appreciation for short stocks that don't get bound up on winter gear. Unless a person is shooting some uber-magnum, I find youth sized stocks are probably more practical than standard stocks in the field.
