For all you K98k aficionados, Bruce Karem's and Mike Steves' new book

"Karabiner 98k Volume 1: A collectors guide to the development and production of the German K98k service rifle up to 1938"

fhN8e.jpg

is now available for general order at ht tp://www.thirdpartypress.com/

This is the first volume of their three volume set and reviews to date say Bruce and Mike have done another outstanding job, even more impressive than "Kriegsmodell Volume 3." These are the K98k reference books to get.

These books are far superior to Backbone. A lot more good info on the K98 has come to light since Backbone was written which has a considerable amount of errors. The same authors also wrote one previously on the Kreigsmodell K98k which is regarded as the bible on late war rifles. The authors are very active on the K98k forum which is a great place to learn about the K98k.

Mike stated the differences well. Backbone is still a great book, but it is a dated book. These new volumes have brought to light new information, corrected assumptions/mistakes and are in colour. These books are the new Gold Standard for collectors and the K98K forum has become an excellent site for K98 research/publication.

BOTW deserves its standing in the list of books about the K98k but as mentioned it is dated, has errors and the author will not be updating it.

You will want 'Karabiner 98K Volume 1' and 'Kriegsmodell Volume 3' as these are the most up to date books about the early and late war K98ks now available.

Plus they are lavishly done, are collectible in their own right and feature input from K98k collectors worldwide. Volume 1 also covers pre K98k rifles such as the Gewehr 98 and Model 88 Commission Rifle.

If you go the the K98k Forum you can see a list of the table of contents: http://www.k98kforum.com/forum.php

Mike and Bruce will be publishing Volume 2 on mid war K98ks in the future.

Yeah, the main issues with BBOTW were:

1) Richard Law had stage 4 terminal brain cancer when he published the book. He knew it was not complete enough but if he did not publish it, he would die first. There are those that say his cancer also affected the content of the product, causing him to overlook fakes and mistakes he published as legit items.

2) The tables listing firearm features were largely based on only one large collection. After Richard died and the book was published, it later came to light the collection used for reference had a fair number of put-together rifles and outright fakes in it perpetrated by the collection owner (not Richard Law). That's why when you sometimes have a correct vet bringback, you can;t get it to match the BBOTW info. It's the book that's often wrong, not the rifle.

It's still the best and only authority on mid-war K98k's and is an excellent starter or background book on the K98k, but for fake detection and rifle validation, these new books will be the new standard for comparisons.

The real funny thing about BBOTW with all it's errors, is when someone takes a perfect rifle, then changes something on it to match what's in the book. All they did was devalue it.
They almost get tunnel vision and start quoting that book like a bible and can't accept anything other than what is in the book! The Walking, Talking Experts!
You see lot's of this on the gun auctions in the States.
Too many humped rifles and fantasy pieces in BBOTW.

It's an entry level book, lots of pictures and schematics and drawings. It's an interesting read but keep an open mind that things arn't always as they appear.

The internet changed everything with real time instant questions, answers and forums.

That will change when Karem and Steves publish Karabiner Volume 2, but they say that won't be before the spring of 2016.

In the meantime lots of folk willing to help out here plus the K98k Forum and Gunboards.

Edited...

Please note: this wasn't meant to be a 'bash BOTW' thread but a thread to let 'nutz' know that 3rd Party Press is now open for orders from people not on the back list.

As a content contributor to their work, I just received my numbered Vol 1 to go with the previous Vol 3. This is an excellent book and highly recommended for serious K98k collectors. :)

When used in conjunction with BBoW, it gives the K98k collector some terrific research capability.

Regards,
Doug
