338LM vs 338LAI

So how often do you anneal?

Say that out loud. Sounds like an Italian Priest talking!

But back on course here. Friggin awesome information being posted about fireforming. But a thought. If I had a super expensive rifle and needed formed brass why use it? I'd take an old beater rifle and have it chambered with the same reamer that made the super accurate rifle's chamber. Then I could fireform in the beater and the brass would be so close that it should work in the tack driver.

Am I out to lunch on this or does it make any sense?

No, you aren't out to lunch. Tough to get two identical chambers (there is wear on the reamer everytime you use it, albeit a minuscule amount), but you can cut them so close that it shouldn't make any difference. I've seen it done for BR guns, including one that was just fitted with a stub for fireforming. Illegal in this country, at least by the letter of the law. I'm not sure that we aren't getting carried away with all this, how much brass are you going to fireform that you figure you'll wear your barrel out doing it? For most rifles that aren't used in competition (varminting being an exception) 100 rounds is a lot of brass. If you wear your barrel out in 100 rounds you have other problems, believe me. FWIW - dan

The stubs I used back in the day (and other shooters, you still see them occasionally), were usually just the length of the cartridge, plus breech threads, and a half inch or so at the "muzzle" end. Roughly 3" or 75 mm. Hence the legality issue in today's atmosphere. - dan

Fair enough. I had the thought after I posted that getting an OAL of 26" would be an issue without a bizarre looking stock, too.

Could anyone with a 338 Lapua Improved 40 could share what dies they are using?

While I don't own one yet, the .338 Lapua Imp will be my next build(if I can ever finish this one), most guys seem to be running the Redding bushing dies for the .338 Lapua impoved.
I appologize if I have mentioned this already but Rick from ATRS has probably had more experience with this calibre than any other gunsmith in Canada so he would definately be the one to ask advice from.
