Yup...although i would say any stock other then a stock stock.

Although if your talking about making it look like an AR(modernizing); stock, grip, hand guard, brake and battle sights(manufacturer does not matter much, buy what you like)

As I show on another thread, a stock Norinco M14 can shoot 1-1.5" with issue iron sights from sandbags at 100m using handloads without much upgrading. That rifle has a spring guide from S&J Hardware and the forestock stiffened. Total cost of maybe $50. The gas cylinder lock was clocked properly and tight from the Chinese high school shop class so no shiming done. You don't have to sink alot of money to make a shooter for what the gun is ( a battle rifle). If you are scoping it, then a cheek riser.
If you want cosmetics then what ever stock rails etc. meets your fancy for what you can afford.
Otherwise handloads and ammo, ammo, ammo.

I'm not trying to build a tack driver ... I have one of those , but I do want to scope it and have the ability to put a bipod on for load testing ... Once I get my eyes checked and a set of prescription glasses I may buy a second put good irons on it and a laminated stock keep it more traditional like all the recommendations !

What bullets are you hand loading ? I was planning on 168 smk with imr4895 or imr4064 at 2.80 and using them for the m14 and my m700 was hoping for 2moa with the m14

Hornady 150gr BTSP ( #3033) with 43 gr of IMR 4064. COL about 2.740. I seat to the cannelure and the cases are trimmed within the spec length for .308 brass. Brand of brass varies. Chrony shows 2599fps. I am not a precision handloader by any means but have had luck with this load in 3 M14s, all being under 2" with issue sights. As always YMMV.
It is a Chinese high school class battle rifle clone but is is fun seeing what can be squeezed out of if performance wise with the least amount of $$ and effort. Enjoy the journey:).

talking modernisation.. which generally means enhanced features for modern optics mounting etc etc..

1. Chassis - Sage, Blackfeather or other ( enhanced ergos and accuracy )
2. Scout or full length upper rail ( versatile optics mounting )
3. Modern muzzle/devices ( threaded with a brake/flash hider that can also accept a suppressor )
4. Upgraded mag release and bolt release levers
5. Match Spring guide ( and other basic accuracy enhancements )

My Top 5 "Must Mods".......

1) USGI Op Rod Spring &
NM Op Rod Spring Guide
2)
Gas Cylinder shimming/gas lock indexing
3)
After market stock - I prefer USGI Fiberglass
4) SEI Direct Connection Vortex Flash Suppressor
5) Navy Style gas lock front sight

instead of the: SEI threaded 5/8 24 adapter (which I assume you want to add a brake), you could get a brake that fits instead, like the goodiron navy brake at armtac.

the cost of the adapter + brake is usually more than a brake made to fit.

If you are buying it to reduce the overall length, there is a time honoured tradition using hacksaws, files and dremels to 'field modify' the supplied flash hider to a more stylish 'bob' ;)

either option is like to leave more cash on hand for ammo

If we are talking "modernization" of the m14 and what that rifle would look like, and I'm talkin just for "my" preferences and purposes....
It would start with an enhanced quality receiver/action, an LRB M25 and a match medium 18.5" barrel.
-smith enterprise coast guard brake
-NM spring guide and wolfe spring
-quality sights
-the lightest tactical non aluminum stock availlable

And there's a couple other things but the above is what I consider a "modernized" m14

What about the bolt like the Fulton armory gen2 bolts any good for the upgrade?

Fulton... Well , since clint snubbed his nose at Canada for so long, denying of so much quality stuff just cuz we're not americans.... I don't or won't spend my money there ;)

As for bolts.... Nothin wrong with yer average norc bolt. We typically only use aftermarket or GI bolts to solve excessive headspace issues or for building high end rifles.
As far as 'modernizing' the platform, a bolt swap just falls under general upgrades and probably not entirely necessary in most norcs we see these days.

and...
Ammo
:)

And finally, a CQB clinic like the one in BC's Interior at 40 degree Celsius temperatures. That'll put the M14 platform through it's paces!

Drop yer purse and rack that rifle like a man! LOL

And finally what shooting an M14 is all about... not the upgrades; but the skills! Lots of ammo !

Git out there and shoot yer rifles. Put down that keyboard, move out of your parents' basement! Start shooting more !

That's all the upgrading you need (for now). Just keep that rifle greased!

Cheers all!

I second Hungry's advice but to answer the question.
1) Op guide rod
2) Shim gas system
3) Scope mount, I prefer the SA scout mount
4) Lightest stock you can find
5) Handloading ammo
