was his name sid roper? i worked at a nursing home in halifax and one of the residents was a tail gunner in ww2. he lost both of his legs to a night fighter attack. he had very few stories he wanted to tell.

No, a man from Saskatchewan who later had a career with the CNR. It's a small world though. His navigator, who he maintained a lifelong friendship with, was born on the quarter section next to our family homestead in SK. They flew with 432 Sqn. The nose section of their aircraft, named "Avenging Angel", is preserved in the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa. Both of them took up private flying as a hobby after the war. He taught his second wife, who owns her own aircraft to the present, how to fly. I took them both to an airshow this past summer where the star attraction was a P-51 Mustang. He sure enjoyed the sound of it's Packard Merlin engine.

Finns or Balts with a T26, probably Finns.

Anyone else been listening to the CBC interviews with the Mac Pap vets BTW?

These are standard US supplied Shermans with the standard 76mm gun. They are most likely the diesel engined M4A2s which were preferred by the Russians. Sherman Fireflies were converted by the Brits installing the 17pdr gun and were in short supply and high demand by British and Cdn armoured units in NW Europe and Italy as they were the most potent counter to the German Tiger and Panther tanks. They were not supplied to the Soviets, altho they were offered to the US Army and declined by them, a decision they soon came to regret.

The 76mm was the Us "upgunning" for the Sherman. Original gun was a pathetic short barreled 75mm, that's probably what you're thinking of.

They are not Fireflys, the muzzles are not right, nor is the hull, I do not believe the Russians ever received 17 pounders. The first two are M4A2E8 Shermans with 76mm guns. They were a common M4 variant of the Lend Lease M4s to Russia.
