hello hello!

normally i load my 30-30 (model 64 1954) with "soup can" 150gr .309 on 3030 or trail boss.
shoots great, but my mold is an old 1bullet and casting only a hundred is a pain.

am also trying to reload for my SKS, and i got plenty of bullet for that.
so i thought;

can i use that resized to .308 instead?

its LEE 155gr .312 pointy bullet for things like 7.62X39.

what do you guys think?

i am not planing on shooting farther than 300-400feet with my rifle.
is this safe? will they be any problem resizing?
 
If shot single shot they would ("likely") be OK if they will chamber ! You WOULD NOT want to load a spire point boolit of any kind into a tube feed gun. as the piont could become a firing pin to the cartrige ahead of it. You may also find that sizing to .at least .309"-.310" you will get much better accuracy from your firearms! Slug the bore and size 1-2 thou over groove diameter.
 
alright, i will check on that.

* i just saw on the die that i use for 30-30, its written : LEE 311 B6
sadly i think all those year ive been shooting .311 out of it.
ill check with my other die to be sure.
 
I don't believe you'd have to size the "pointy" bullet down to .308 dia.

In my old Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets there are dozens of loads for .30 cal lead bullets sized to .311. And even one with a 158 gr lead bullet sized to .312.

For the sake of safety - don't load hard cast "pointy" bullets in a tubular magazine.
 
If a .311" boolit will chamber without having to force it . I would not worry too much about it being too large! Like ai had mentioned you should realy slug your bore to see what size it actualy is! Just because it is suposed to be a .308" bore doesn't mean that it is.
 
Two things: you need round nose bullets for tube feed, and slug your bore properly and get a measurement before you load an oversize bullet.
 
alright, that pretty much answered everything.
i will make a batch and try it as soon as possible.

i was worried about the bullet shape, the pointy one dont have long of groove compared to the old one.

I agree. My Marlin 30/30 slugs at 0.308" and my own cast boolits are sized at 0.311" Very accurate with no leading at all.
 
I have shot unsized .311 cast bullets out of the 30-30 without issue. But pointed bullets are a safety issue with the tube mag. Two shots, one of those chambered, max.

One other issue you may have, is locking up the action because of the extended length of the pointed bullet. So make up a dummy round and try that first.

I just re sized a batch of .430 to .427 without issue, so you should have no problem sizing.
