Expensive 'mistake(?)'. The dog did survive. And interesting what comes up when you google the offenders name....

The inability to differentiate a dog from a coyote has proven costly for a Campbellford man.

Robert Goudreault was fined $3,333 for careless hunting that resulted in the shooting of a dog. He also paid and additional $1,666 in veterinary bills. Goudreault plead guilty to the charge of careless hunting during a hearing before Justice of the Peace Deanne Chapelle on Dec. 11. In addition to the fine, his hunting licences have been cancelled until he completes an accredited hunter safety course and passes the exam. The court heard that in March 2012, Goudreault was hunting coyotes from a tree stand in Stirling-Rawdon Township.

He had a high-powered rifle equipped with a scope. Goudreault was watching a coyote decoy from about 125 metres away when he saw “a large animal with yellow-white fur charge the decoy,” according to a statement by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Without “taking due care to verify his target,” Goudreault shot the dog believing it to be a “white wolf.” On further investigation by a conservation officer, it was found to be a white Akbash dog belonging to a local resident.

Hmmm I dunno about this one...An Akbash looks rather "wolfy", especially from 125 yards away. Surprised buddy plead out, I would have fought it for sure.

I don't know what an Akbash looks like, but it was his best defense owning up to it.. He got off pretty lucky only having to pay fines and vet bills.... as well as retaking the hunting course to get his licence back..... he could have lost his PAL/firearms....

I'm a dog lover but I tend to side with the hunter on this one. If you have a "wolf like" dog, or any dog for that matter, running loose in a field where hunting take place, don't be surprised if it get shot at.

Very interesting, if it is the same person. The name is the same, it's the only person by that name listed in the phonebook in Ontario, and both hunt coyotes in Ontario, so it very well might be the same person.

Would be nice to know more, like was the dog waring a collar or was the dog on the owners land. Sad story either way, I bet the hunter feels bad about what happined. I sure would

An akbash looks like a big white retriever. There is no way to mistake it for a white wolf other than poor eyesight. If you can't tell the difference between a domesticated non-spitz breed dog and a wolf you need to quit hunting. It's like shooting a cow and saying you thought it was an elk.

X3 and it sure sounds like the "hunter" was just eager to get a kill of any sort.

Glad he's getting fined good for disregarding to properly ID his target.

We don't need trigger happy idiots who just shoot at anything that moves out there.

Taxidermist who doesn't know what a wolf looks like?;) If the dog was running at large, apparently harrasing wildlfe, he had it coming. Shouldn't have to make an excuse.

Grizz

Read the comments on this article & it will be much clearer what has transpired here. http://www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com/2013/01/04/hunter-fined-for-shooting-dog
These are the kind of people that give hunting a bad name.

Wow someone isn't a popular person in the Peterborough area are they?? Upon finding out who this guy is, what he does for a living, and the comments on the article, I retract my previous statement of "I side with the hunter". Sounds like a real POS that had it coming.

this guy is a jacka** now that said dongs not matter where should not be running free and if they are they better stay on they're owners land too many yuppies moving out of citys and leting they're dogs run free thinking its ok and nothing will happen i tell them ever hear of a coyote or wolf they can and have killed many dogs also if you have something like a husky or even a shepherd it would be just stupid to let them run free

Robert Goudreault?? LMAO!! I am not surprised in the least. he is originally a hometown boy from our neck of the woods. One season for the duck opener we all had permission to hunt on the same private property. The ducks were feeding in the barley and many were going into a cattle pen to water in the puddles. He built himself a blind IN THE CATTLE PEN from hay bales the evening before the hunt. The next morning he showed up to discover the cows had eaten his blind then came after us on the other end of the farm looking to fight, accusing us of tearing down his blind! I won't tell you the comments from my hunting partners aimed at his stupidity based on his ethnic background because it would get me an infraction but I am sure you can figure it out. Man we have laughed for over 20 years about that day....., wait until I send them this bit of news...LMAO!!!Laugh2Laugh2Laugh2

Oh and BTW in case anybody is interested this guy is the owner of Woods and Water Guidng and Taxidermy. He advertises in OOD.
