Shot dog, thought it was a wolf

I'm a dog lover but I tend to side with the hunter on this one. If you have a "wolf like" dog, or any dog for that matter, running loose in a field where hunting take place, don't be surprised if it get shot at.

our dogs are part of the family, but i also understand that it's my responsibility to control them and it's nobodies fault but my own should they be injured/killed when they're off leash. i really can't understand how some people allow their animals to wander and then wonder why their dog or cat never comes home. then you have the idiots that use the "well, it's a farm dog/cat excuse" because they allow their animals to run rampant. well, dumb dumb, your farm animal should stay on the farm and do it's job rather than wandering the bush

Sounds like the dog was on the loose and looking to harass wildlife.

it's too bad the guy is a bad shot

I know a guy who shot a goat, that he thought was a deer...That mistake cost $1500 in vet bills, and alot of harassment since..

Did you read the comments about him repeatedly taking potshots at landowners dogs on their property?

The guy is a nutjob, and people should not be standing up for him. He is an embarrassment and liability to the hunting and shooting communities.

I don't know many/any farmers that have a dog that isn't unchained..
Where I bowhunt for deer, I have had loose dogs ruin my hunt many times in the past. Ive even had people come walking through the field with the dog and kids in tow, riding atv's and dirtbikes, with not a care in the world that they are trespassing. I'm sure some of them do this intentionally.

Instead of saying "oops", he should have said he shot a dog interfering with the hunt and scaring away game. Problem solved.

That wouldn't solve anything and would likely cause further legal headaches and unforeseen problems. Just because we are out with a gun, doesn't mean we get to shoot anything we please, especially domestic animals, on whatever pretext we feel like conjuring up. Antis love exactly that mind set...and so do sympathetic left leaning media.

"How may I ask did it ruin your hunt?"

Because deer just love to play with dogs? Not afraid of them at all?

??????? I have a buddy that feeds deer at his place all through the hunting season and winter. I have yet to ever see one not bolt at the sight of his dogs and he does not allow the dogs to chase after them. When the deer come in to feed if they see either of his dogs on the back deck they take off! Yes I have seen videos of deer and dogs in a neighbourhood nosing up to one another but I think that is deer accustomed to hand outs and trying to overcome their fears in order to be fed.

Yep, but if buddy's out hunting, and dogs come running through his section, it's pretty likely that'll make for a deer-free hunting environment very quickly. Unless he likes just hanging out in trees anyway, I'd say the dogs would ruin his hunt.

Oh I misunderstood, I thought you meant it would NOT ruin his hunt, yes of course it will..................dogs and deer do not make for a winning combo! LOL

i dunno...... my 2 rottweillers don't seem to mind when the deer trespass over the bridge into my back yard to get into the crab apples :D
and the deer don't seem to mind the dogs either. mine just sit and watch....... but they're trained to do that hehehe

how a taxidermist and outfitter could not verify his target as a domestic animal at 100 or so yards is beyond me...... and there is no excuse.
you can't take back a bullet, that's why target verification for any shooter in any situation is so important.
i hope the dog is okay and it's owners learn to teach it to stay on it's own property .

The farm next to me have two working dogs to protect the cattle from predators,Both these dogs are very large and all white,These dogs live with the cattle and to my knowledge never seen the inside of a house let alone being tied.Only trouble i have with these dogs is in the winter and they are crossing the road it's almost impossible to see them as their coats are white as snow.

Was it this one?

I can see where the guy's coming from, though. I've had a domestic dog charge up to an e-caller, and I won't lie, I had my bead on him until he stopped at the caller and I got a good look at the face.

I've come close to shooting a husky mutt. It came sneaking up a ditch bank toward my call. Head down bushy tail low and stiff. If I didn't see the bright collar thru the scope I would have mistaken it for a coyote. It is possible. I have had german shepards and labs chase deer thru the bush while I was bow hunting as well. Accidents do happen and mistakes can be made. However it sounds like this guy is just a jackass
