My first AR big plans

Hi i just got my first ar about a month ago and i got some big plans (i think so any way) and i want some advice help tips tricks etc.

Its a colt LE6920 so in keeping with that same level of quality remember while answering that money is second to quality (but im not made of money so if theres some where to save some let me know) also remember that this will be a slow accumulation of parts not gonna buy it all tomorrow

1st ive pretty much desided on an magpul afg but i also want vertical forgrip but havent found the perfect one the magpul ones are nice but to stubby.

2nd i want an a2 style stock (with the cleaning kit compartment) are some offerd that dont require me to replace the current buffer tube

3rd quad rail hand guards for 16 20 and maybe 10.5 inch uppers

4th optics... no idea what i want (very happy with irons for now) but thinking about some sort of red dot or EOtech

5th other accessories

thoughts, opinions, advice, anything about ARs?
 
2nd: if you have a carbine, and want a rifle stock, you have to replace your buffer tube.
There are stock kits available that come with everything you need.
Mind you, depending one how much storage you want, there are many Magpul offerings that have storage.
They have a few carbine stocks with storage you can just slip onto your existing buffer tube.
You'll need to know if your buffer tube is Mil-Spec or Commercial first to get the right one.

3rd: Pretty much to taste.

4th: I have an Eotech, I dig it. Lots of people here are fans of Aimpoint.

5th: I'm a fan of heavy buffers. Might be worth looking into.
 
Whats the point of a heavy buffer? it would slow the cycle wouldn't it? the only pro to that i can think of would be more reliable feeding?
 
Remember I think you need to do lots of reading first to understand what you want
General opinion won't help.
Your big plan remember is an AFG and a Grip. A2 stock. Quadrail....some sort of optic? and a bunch of accessories.
How are you choosing your accessories? By looks? Have you used the AFG yet or the 'too stubby' Vertical grips?
The short vertical grips are great.

and the heavy buffer is more reliable extraction.......;)

i'm an infantier so i have a good deal experience with the ar but not much experience with other then issued gear that's why i'm asking for peoples opinions on things. i have not used an AFG but i understand its use for CQB and i have used a short fore grip like the magpul (not the magpul) and ive used a couple others and i like the longer ones. im hoping to get ideas and learn new things to grow my plans and thanks for the link
 
Decide what you are going to be doing with the rifle, and then decide what options would enhance performance. You can load it up with all sorts of bells and whistles that don't contribute a lot.
 
The primary purpose of a buffer is to prevent bolt bounce back on auto. A heavy buffer was intended to accommodate a heavier barrel (or attachments like a GL) that increased bounce back - and light strikes.

Many short carbines use the weight of the buffer to slow down unlocking and extracting to increase reliability. A semi auto only 14.5 inch barrel with the correct sized gas port will only require a standard buffer.

In fact, no semi needs a "buffer". Colt came out with a plastic spring guide years ago that worked fine, but the crying and whining was so loud...
 
Normally I'd suggest to shoot lots before getting accessories, however given your current experience with ARs, we can forgo that...

I think for the stock, you just need to figure out what you're looking for. If you're looking for the A2 fixed stock with a compartment, is it for the look? Or did you like the LOP of the fixed stock? Or did you want that just for the storage compartment. There are a few Magpul stocks (amongst others) that slip onto the carbine buffer tube that has storage compartments. However, if you wanted the fixed stock style, then you will have to change the carbine buffer for a rifle buffer. There's also the Magpul UBR option as well... pretty much the best of both worlds.

As for the AFG, you seem pretty decided with that, not a bad thing I have both an AFG and a vert-grip and like them both... I've only really used the Magpul grip, I use it mainly as a handstop/reference point

As for other accessories, I like ambidextrous controls, bigger charging handles like the BCM Gunfighter Mod 3, and a different grip like a Magpul K-grip... that's about it... I run my AR pretty slick and simple, though I toss a light on it for fun sometimes, depends on my mood

1) Go with the Tango Down stubby and the KAC QD sling attachment. That way if you want the feel of the AFG it will almost mimick it and plus if you shoot your rifle like I do then you can do the extended pistol grip and it will allow you to do this also.
2) Look for a Magpul UBR. It will give you the best of all worlds that you are looking for. Or a Troy Battle Axe might do it for you in a pinch.
3) Daniel Defense is what you should be looking for. As there is even a free floated handguard set that will allow you to keep your front post sight and easly install it to your rifle with out the need of a gun smith.
4) EoTech reflex sight or a Aimpoint is what you really want EoTech's are great for shoty's but for fast moving AR's all you really need is a dot and zero it at 300 meter's. Then you will know that anything with in that range will be more or less 5 -/+ of your 300 meter zero.
5) the only other thing I could think of that you might need is a light but most Canadians raley compete in low light enviroment but the most important accessory to buy and learn how to properly use is a sling. Defenatly will make or brake you on trying to get that x ring.

Ah yes, I forgot about item 3... There are a few companies that makes rails that'll install easily into the standard delta ring of your AR... I found the Daniel Defense Omega rails to be really easy to install, and I think they may fit over a low profile gas block. Or if you still have the FSP, then it'll just fit up to where the hand guard cap sits (depending on length)... ie a carbine length will only cover 7" of your barrel. Usually you fit the rails to your barrel/gas system your running... I don't think people get a rail system to fit multiple barrels.
 
thanks for the heads up on the daniel defense rails and your right i would need one for every different upper. as far as the stock i want the a2 style for multiple reasons looks, storage and when i was trained it was on an c7a1 with that stock and it felt much sturdier and better balanced the rifle we now have c7a2s with the adjustable stock but to me the only plus to that is it work with and with out a flak jacket.

as far as over all purpose of the rifle is everything mostly CQB but i also want to group at ranges of 3-400 meters. to me that the beauty of the ar its customizabilty for every situation
