BC Initiation Hunting License

Hi all --

I've been thinking about taking my CORE and registering for a hunters number in BC to satisfy my curiosity about hunting. However, after doing some background reading today I stumbled across a document (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/regulations/1214/docs/hunting_trapping_front.pdf) and on page 15 it went into detail about an Initiation Hunting License.

This was exciting news for me, because truthfully, I don't know if hunting is really for me. I'd like to try it, but I'm not convinced that I'm a hunter. I'm curious if anyone knows if this license will be valid for the 2013 hunting season as it would be a great opportunity for me to save the cost of a CORE course when I am clearly on the fence about becoming a hunter.

Any information you all have regarding the subject would be appreciated.

I believe the initiation license requires someone with CORE
to let you use their tags when hunting with them. Unless you
already know someone who is willing to do this it might be
best to do your CORE and get your own tags. If you take
up bow hunting its mostly walking and waiting so even if
you find you aren't comfortable killing anything don't worry,
the opportunity is rare.
 
Ya I have a friend who has been hunting with his father since he could walk, and I'm anxious to try the sport out. My uncle is also into ducks. Realistically, I'm not going to hunt unless it's under the mentorship of someone more experience.

I like the idea of the initiation license because I could save myself the cost of the CORE in the event I don't take up hunting. I do however completely agree that the CORE would be valuable... if I got the itch for hunting.

And bow hunting isn't on my radar, at the time.
 
CORE is extremely cheap, and will teach you more than you can find out here about the proper path and ways in hunting. If you like to be outdoors, like a challenge, and eat meat you'll love hunting. We came to where we are today as a result of hunting, and it's a sad fact people now feel awkward about it. Get out there and enjoy. :) CORE's the first step and will get you in touch with others and teach you invaluable information. Quite frankly you shouldn't be out trying to hunt without it anyhow, you'll cover shot placement (critically important, the hit area for a clean kill is actually quite small), identification, meat handling and prep, etc.
 
last spring, I brought a young man with me bear hunting. he fished with me,he asked what was the difference between fishing and hunting. before I could answer him, a black bear was spooked by us. it was on the road side hill,hiding behind a tiny tree, standing and looking at us. we were all motionless. just when I decided to swing my gun to shoot,it ran away.

so I asked him,what is the difference between fishing and hunting. he was still excited by the encounter. he said, hunting is like a soldier in a war.
 
The wording is "planned to be introduced" so it might be a while yet.

Why not just do the CORE and be done with it? Then go for a drive this spring and shoot a bear and see if you like the blood and guts part of hunting. The shooting part is easy.


As far as "hunting is like a soldier in a war" I suppose a kid raised on video games might have that impression, but the last time I checked, in a war the other guy might shoot back.

Last I heard from a BOD of the BC Wildlife Fed. was/is it is in discussion at this time.
As for the cost involved, why not consider it as tuition as in an Education about Hunting and Game Identification?
It is a cheap (inexpensive) form of education...

The initiation licence is on track for 2013. It would be a once in a life time licence, and similar to a junior licence, hunting would have to be done with a licenced individual and any game taken would be tagged on the regular licence (not the initiation licence). Also, the junior licence will be expanded to ages 10-17 from the current 10-14.
