.17 HMR Target Rifle Advice...

I think they are all pretty accurate. I've had a cz452 and a zastava. Both would shoot under 1 inch at 100yrds. I have no doubt that the offerings from savage and marlin will do the same.
 
i have a marlin 17 hmr heavy barrel, love the accuracy it shoots well within 1" at 100 yrds, i have a bushnell 6 18 x 50mm that works fantastic on it , past 150 yards wind becomes a big issue, though but i love it very good training rifle for new shooters as well , i shoot grouse with it head shots only, haha , i took one out of a tree 100 plus yards last fall in the head , now i have to try 150 to beat the record, sorry to go on & on
 
What is the point of target shooting a .17hmr? .22lr punches paper just fine, hits steel too. Spend the money on ammo and learn to read the wind.

I'm also looking at a .17HM for target shooting and was looking a Savage 93R17 BSEV. Defiantly curious to know what everyone else has to say about a good/accurate .17HM.

Ayup.

If you are serious about target shooting, buy a quality .22, and pay about the same amount for proper target ammo, as you are paying for run of the mill .17 ammo.

You don't actually HAVE any choices as far as actual target quality ammo goes for the .17s . The stuff that is available, well, all of it is pretty decent, but it is not made to the same standards as the actual target ammo is for a .22LR.

But if all you want is a reasonably accurate gun to burn ammo at paper, go with the one you like.

I have a Savage 93R17 BVSS in 17 HMR with a Bushnell Banner 6-18x50mm. It does this at 100 yards:

10 shot group with Hornady 17 grain V-Max. This was a fairly breezy day, could all be in one hole with a little practice with the rifle. That's a half inch red square BTW.

nice. i was thinking of getting a 17hmr for targeting shooting at 100 yards myself. I have a 22lr bolt action already. I may try my hand at that with target ammo however I've heard shooting sub 1" groups with 22lr is possible though takes a lot of skill and have to wait for your shots and time it in accordance to the wind.

If anyone else has any thoughts please shoot em forward.

What he said. Here's a few targets from my modified Anschutz 54 Match .22. The first 3 are at 100 metres and Eley Match ammo was used, the last target was shot at 100yds. with Eley Tenex and perfect early morning conditions.

1st day out with the Savage 93R17FVSS (stainless, target barrel, synthetic stock) was 0.75 inches for groups of 5.

Pretty good. Noticed when I got home the rear scope mount was a little loose ... things can only get better the next time out. Not bad for a $350 rifle.

I have a couple of those to in MR, they are very nice also, but the SS metal doesn't help accuracy, which is why I recommended the cheaper FV model;

If you are serious about shooting little "itty bitty" groups, you will want 24X as a MINIMUM... some prefer 32X target scopes... 24X is sufficient for me, but 16X is definitely NOT enough. Good shooting.
 
Im thinking of picking up a Vortex CFII 6-18-44 for my 17. Have a Bushnell banner on it now and dont like it, so time for a change.

Members of this forum have witnessed me shoot consecutive sub moa goups at 100 yards, with my Volquartsen semi auto, shooting RWS Championship edition. My Anschutz 1907 repeater does better than that shooting SK Standard Plus.

That depends on the particular load that you are using.
 
I have both 22 and 17 hmr there both rugers. The 17 is an m 77 I like it but.... Would rather have it in 22 because I could interchange the 10 22 clips and simplify my collection. That being said 1000 rounds of hmr is only like 500 bucks and shoots flatter is a little louder.
