New shotgun stock magpul or hogue?

I think you can just remove the recoil pad, cut the stock (up to about 1"), and reattach the recoil pad if the stock is otherwise ok with you. cheaper option for DIY.

I've never handled a Magpul, but Hogue stocks are good to go in either the 13.75" regular length or 12" short length version.

The deeply curved grip section, grippy rubberized surface and effective recoil pad are full of win.

The only issue might be the length, 12" is awefully short for most people unless you shoot squared up, whereas 13.75" isn't much shorter than factory length.

If the length of reach to the forend is more of an issue than length-of-pull, you might be better off swapping to a longer forend than changing out the buttstock.

Ive had great success with Hogue and if its for an 870 there is a good chance you can find it in domestic retail.

Also... given that it is an 870 and if you shop around carefully you could go with an AR style adapter, a pistol grip and an adjustable stock.

I have an 870 setup like that and quite like it.

No experience with Magpul but I just installed a 12" Hogue on my HP-9. The recoil pad is like a decelerator and the lop is quite comfortable for me. Most of my milsurps have a similar LOP so I'm used to it. Just pull your head back a little and don't stand sideways to your target like a fudd.

I've never used either one but I have a Magpul SGA stock on order. I've read that the hand angle/placement feels better, and the cheek height can be adjusted for bead, ghost rings, or optics. I also like the variety of sllng mount options.

I've heard you can punch yourself in the nose shooting with the Hogue short stock if you cheek it wrong. Can't do that with the Magpul due to the different grip design. Still, the Magpul looks ugly and the Hogue more traditional. I might try out the Hogue if I dislike the Magpul.

The trick is not to rap your thumb around the stock, lay it flat along your hand, takes a little getting use to.

I've used a hogue 12" for a long time and it's fantastic. I haven't bothered to try the magpul because I've been so happy with the hogue.

I've also used speedfeed, knoxx, and choate. Keep going back to the 12" lop hogue.

I'm sure that works for the two handed shooting part, but I assume that makes it difficult to shoot one handed or manipulate the gun one handed so you can load it.

Thats when it's O.K. to move your thumb back around the stock, as you shouldn't have to worry about being clocked in the snout when reloading or anything non-firing.lol

ETA; Firing One hand, not sure it matters where you place [didn't say put.] your thumb, that stock is coming back and up towards you face.

I can wrap my thumb around my short Hogue stock and not come close to hit myself under recoil, however I don't really like having my hand in close proximity to my face like that regardless of thumb position.
