A question to winchester model 70 owners. Wondering how the new model 70's are holding up? Since FN took over the company a couple years ago, have they improved in quality, workmanship and accuracy? I found a beautiful suspergrade the other day and was thinking I should purchase it. Let me know.

I have two of the new FN M70's, one Super Grade and a FW. Both are top notch quality IMO and i have been very impressed with them. I want to pick up another FW in a 25-06 soon to.

I'd venture that those new FN's may be some of the best M-70's ever built. Get one while you can.

I am sure you will get flamed by the "pre 64" crowd...I have owned one Pre 64 and I am not sure what all the hype is about, they aren't that great...definitely no better than the current FN's

I also have two of the new M-70's one super grade, one featherweight, have used M-70's since the early 70's and these are some of the best they have made. Don't how this Portugal move is going to effect things. Rumor is the parts will be made in the US and assembled only in Portugal. If you look on Epps web site for example they have very few M-70's left in stock. Since that Portugal anouncement they have been disappearing regularly.

LOL. I will only accept flaming if they own 6 or more pre-64's and in a minimum of 4 distinct variations....and I'll need pictures too.;)

Fear not my friend, this pre-64 owner isn't going to flame you.
I have three and probably going to sell them soon... nice rifles but in my safe they're redundant.

I know what you mean. I had one but my 1st choice was with a recently acquired Schultz & Larsen. My M 70 was in 300WM and I had just acquired the Schultz in 308NM. At the time, funds were a little on the tight side for my buddy so I gave him the M 70 for his Jan. 1st birthday. Here's a couple of quick shots of it.

Beautiful rifle Johnn....
Always respect the man with a rifle where the blueing is worn off of the bolt knob!!

OP...I have a recent model 70, and the fit and finish is nice, and the rifle is accurate. I am partial to Winchesters, but any new ones I've seen seem to be of consistent quality.

Soon as I heard of the move to Portugal, I made up my mind to put one of my other rifles up for sale that I wasn't using much (BSA Martini Mk3 .22) and find an FN Win 70 in 30-06.

Was planning for the Supergrade but I decided against the bit of extra weight as this would be my primary hunting rig and the $ savings in the featherweight helped as well. Hope to have it when I get home Thursday.

Were it not for the Portugal move, I would have waited till the spring. A buddy tells me that Portugal and Spain have a history of making really nice firearms so maybe not much to worry about. That said, I'm sure the initial production batch of anything has its flaws.

Sixty four sixty five model 70 were without doubt the worst years for the model 70 Winchester with sloppy bolt ,large barrel Chanel in the stock .
But by 76 the model 70 saw quite a few improvements such as a bolt Guide that smoothed out the bolt made it slick and nice fit an finish on wood and metal .There we’re some nice push feed model 70 rifles made during the seventies .

I'm actually really not a fan of the push feeds... now, I can't speak to the sixty four or sixty five models.... My PARENTS were born around that time. But, the new production Extreme Weather Stainless Model 70 in 6.5 Creedmoor I picked up has been outstanding. Fit, finish, accuracy (and I mean ACCURATE), and just all around build quality is terrific.

I had planned to rebarrel it off the get go to 308, it's a hunting rifle after all... But shooting the factory barrel was just basically an obligation because who knows.. maybe it'll shoot. Yeah... 5 shots measuring around 0.38" at 100m.... That barrel with the itty bitty bullets lived to shoot another day.
