I can only imagine the facepalms you guys will be doing when you read my question. :)

I thought I new what a 1911 platform was. I just read the "CZ Pistols" thread and was surprised to read that they are not a 1911 platform. :confused:

Would someone mind explaining what the difference is? If there is a link I'd be good with that too.

Cz is a great pistol, but no they are not a 1911 platform.
1911 is a pistol that was developed by john browning for the military pistol trials to replace their 38 caliber revolver.
Also a verygood pistol.
it is like saying a 98 mauser many companies have reproduced it but if it dosn't have the looks and charicteristics of the original, it isnt.

How can someone with very little gun experience identify a 1911 platform by sight etc.

Most look pretty much the same to me........
 
I love my 1911, the CZ is a excellent choice, I like the Shadow model of CZ, right fit in the hand....., more than a 1911, but I love the 1911 platform...... ok,,,,,, go for both ...lolll

Does the CZ style have and advantage over the 1911 platform or vise versa?

I think what is confusing me is that many companies market their pistol as a ###### 1911 ###x

agree, look at the 1911, and then just for fun look at the response from the Russian to the 1911, the Tokarev TT33, compare each other....., the Tok as same kind of frame, same kind of slide / spring / barrel, but the rest....way different....trigger, hammer action, no safety, no beavertail,
 
1911 is a platform and many companies make them. CZ75 is another platform and other companies do make a copy, like Norinco. They are different and with experience you will just see one and know immediately what it is. I don't think you can go wrong with either, both are fantastic platforms.

They both go bang if thats what your asking :nest:

Just Kidding, I think what you are referring to is the "battery of arms". In which case, no they function differently.

Take some time to look over the 2 pistols you are considering (You could even go on youtube and find a table top review if your not near a gun shop.)

Many companies make a 1911 style pistol because they are still one of the most popular platforms ever made. (even after 100 years of technological advancements)

As far as advantages go... I would say that it is all personal preference. Both are great guns and if your like me, you will end up getting both in the long run.

Whichever platform you choose I'm sure you will be happy.

In case of emergency I dial 1911 :p
 
Well, in a pure 1911 gun, there is no ramp to the barrel... In the CZ, there is. The ramp I write of is a slot running from where the bullet from the magazine travels up, along, and into the barrel. It is referred to as the 'ramped barrel' and is a very good feature, which reduces jamming. But, many guns that are in every other aspect 1911's now include the ramped barrel feature.

Also, in the CZ, there is no recoil spring plug and barrel bushing... At the front of the barrel of a 1911 gun, a step in removing the gun barrel and slide to first remove barrel bushing, usually using a bushing wrench. On the CZ guns, they seal the end of the slide and eliminate the barrel bushing.

LOL, but not to be confused, there also exists a more compact 1911, referred to as the 'Titan' frame, which also does not have a barrel bushing. The SAM Titan is an example, and sold in Canada with the 4.25"barrel sticking out past the slide.

All good posts you have from everyone, I personaly prefer for a 1911 platform a full size, but Man the CZ Shadow is way ###y looking .... :eek:) lolll....

This may help: 99% of the time when people are talking about a 1911, they are talking about a pistol that fires the .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) round. The CZ, shown as a contrast, is 9mm, a smaller round.

The other 1% would be the .22 conversions and the few 9mm or other caliber versions of the 1911. By the way, 1911 is the year it was designed. Pretty modern looking gun from way back, eh?
 
1911 COLT was original John Browning design in .45ACP Cal. American service pistol from before WW1 until replaced by Beretta Model 92 U.S.G designated M9. Later civilian colts were made in .38 Auto and still later in other cartridges. There were some fairly early knock-offs, eg: Spanish STAR pistol. Now with patent protection expired everybody and his brother make 1911 knock-offs.

P1935 was last John Browning pistol design. Made by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium in 9mmX19 Luger and copied and made in Canada by Inglis in WW2. Used by both sides in WW2. Since copied by a bunch of people.

Both the above are SINGLE ACTION pistols, where if the hammer is lowered it has to be manually cocked for first shot.
CZ did a take off on the Browning 1935 (CZ75 Pre-B) which was a DOUBLE ACTION 9mm where the lowered hammer could be raised and dropped by a long pull of the trigger. Other people like FEG did a copy, some of which are single and some double action. Now CZ makes a lot of pistol models on this design in various chamberings.
