So, I'm going through a lot of .223 ammo these days and I'm wondering just how worth it it is to reload my own? Just how much cheaper is it? Does it bring the cost of .223 closer to the cost of .22lr?

Does it bring the cost of .223 closer to the cost of .22lr?

no way, no how. .22lr is ~$0.04 a round. just a single primer is ~$0.04 a round as it is, so most defenatly not.
I was getting .223 reloads with localy bought components for about $0.25 a round, buying in bulk will bring that number down a bit.

good luck.

It will bring your cost per round down depending on which bullets and components you use and it can bring your quality of ammo and accuracy up quite a bit depending on how you load and what you were shooting before. Tooling to set up can run from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on how complex you want to get and how fast you want to load if you are going to do large quantities at once.

Premium match and hunting bullets cost more, but then again so do premium hunting and match ammo. FMJ surplus type ammo can be cheap but again so can bulk FMJ bullets. And in all cases you can reload your brass multiple times.

You will never save money reloading, just shoot a lot more volume.

Generally speaking for plinking purposes, if you are cost conscience reloads will run 30% of store bought especially if you go with bulk purchases of materials and cast bullets ( not applicable to 223)
