I just purchased a Savage Axis 270Win, Came with a Bushnell 3x9-40 and some cheap low set rings.

Modifications:

-I switched out the rings for ones that sat a bit higher because the bolt was hitting the scope and wearing off the finish even after cycling the action just a few times. (I forget what kind of rings I put on but I remember spending around $60 on them, each one takes 6 torx screws (if that rings a bell to any one reading this feel free to attempt to id them.)) Weaver tactical rings ~ thanks khoeep for the solid identification.
-I also installed a small harris bipod

Other then that the rifle is the way it was out of the box

With out the aftermarket scope rings, but with the bipod and new Browning double stack rifle case this purchase came to $701.98 after tax from the Gun Dealer in McAdam NB.

I own a pretty good variety of fire arms but I am ashamed to say this is my first bolt action so I am not exactly an expert on accuracy.

I was impressed with the accuracy of this rifle but Im sure that is simply because I only have Semi Autos to refrence. This rifle is light weight and decently accurate. I started shooting at 100m and moved up to 300m after zeroing. I was shooting at a 1'x1' 3/4'' steel plate and at 100m, I hit the plate high right knocking it off center (it was just resting up against a wood post) but instead of going down range and repositioning it I figured I could shoot it low left and push the plate back to where it was originally. I wasnt able to get the plate back to where it was, but not because I didnt hit the plate where I wanted, instead simply because what I was trying to do wasnt possible. How ever when I did go down range I saw that the two rounds I fired landed almost on top of each other on the side edge of the plate. Thats right, both shots hit the 3/4'' part of the 3/4'' steel plate.

At 300m I was able to hit the plate with relative ease once I adjusted my zero to compensate for the change in distance. She made the plate ring almost every time with some exceptions where the varrying results were most likely caused by me and not the rifle. I was shooting federal 150 grain, remington 150 grain and winchester 150 with little to no change in grouping at 100m, at 300m it almost seemed like I was getting tighter groupings with the federal, which is convenient because they also happend to be the cheapest.

In conclusion, I am satisfied with these results. Until my skill increases to match the full potential of this rifle I cant see me upgrading from this platform for a while (No .50 Cals or .338's just yet). The only thing negative I can say I have already said, the bolt handle hitting the scope right out of the box seems like a bit of a fail on Savage's part, and I guess I was disapointed that it didnt come with the Acutrigger.

I dont really know much about what the general communities opinion on this rifle is so if you have experiences that either varry or are similar feel free to share them with me and anyone reading this.

Ps This rifle comes with a free floating barrel, any videos that I have watched on increasing the accuracy of a bolt action suggest ensuring your barrel is free floating. Buuuuuuuuut.... since thats already done are there any other quick tricks to increasing accuracy of this fire arm?

Cheers - Matt.

Paperslayer are you saying that this rifle doesnt belong in the precision forum? If so I apologize like I said Im no expert on accuracy. I like my m14's, sks', vz58's, Ar15's etc, etc. To me anything with a bolt and a scope is "precision". What seperates a "precision" rifle and a bolt action hunting rifle? shouldnt a hunting rifle also be a precision rifle? and couldnt you easily use a precision rifle for hunting? Or is it appearance, weight, style? its got a Bipod, free floating stainless steel barrel, synthetic stock, I mean it looks like some of the "precision" rifles I see on the EE.

Generally speaking a precision rifle has a heavy barrel, high power scope, very ergonomic and adjustable stock or chassis a hunting rifle is a light weight barrel, more of a "classic" looking stock and the scopes are lower power with covered turrets and fixed parallax.

There is nothing wrong with shooting paper with a hunting rifle or game with a "precision rifle" but each one will do better at its intended purpose , a hunting rifle tends to be much lighter to pack then a target rifle and when it comes to punching paper the target rifle will generally have the upper hand

Sorry this is brief I'm on my phone

If the stock has a aluminum bedding block, you could get it bedded. Maybe a trigger upgrade.
