Dueling Tree

I didn't use springs, I used 1" o.d. Seemless pipe which has an I.D. Of 1/2" . The trick to making them work right at different distances and with a variety of ammo is adjustable tilt... I used a turn buckle and hinged the bottom... If the targets swing around and bounce back at a given distance/ammo combination, adjust it so the tree is more vertical, if they come part way up and fall back down tip it forward slightly... Also I used 1/2" bolts with a slight angle for the pivots.

The problem with using ar 550 is that cutting it with a torch or plasma will heat it and soften the edges..a good portion of your target would remain hardened but where you heated it, you would lose your tempering.

Do you have any pics you'd like to share? What you described sounds like what I had in mind. I'm not sure about the turnbuckle and pipe though.

Ill take some close ups ... But it's in a snow bank... And it's a blizzard. If we have a nice day ill test it against something a little higher velocity. I don't have anything chambered in 5.56mm but if I hit it with a 50 grain bullet doing better than 3000 fps it should provide a good torture test to see how it would stand up

Is there a source for AR550 armor steel targets in Canada?? If I ordered three Action Targets, the total cost with shipping and duty would be over 1200!! unreal.

It would be smart to do a group buy and then head over the border to at the border storage and pick them up.

I built one a few weeks ago. Mine has 1/2" steel plates. Works great for 38 special and 357 magnum but 44 magnum just slams the plates around. Adjusting the angle isn't enough. I think if you wanted to shoot 44 you would need plates that are a lot heavier.
