My FIL managed to scrounge up an old shotgun in some sort of garage sale deal and it turns out that it's a W&C Scott and Son double that according to the serial number was made in 1886 or 1887.

It's in pretty rough shape. It looks like someone didn't know that they had a fairly valuable shotgun on their hands and used it for run-of-the-mill bird and rabbit hunting. There's no blueing left that I can tell and the stock is pretty beat up. It looks like the stock may have even been refinished.

Here are a few pics. Is there anything that anyone on here can tell me about it?

Cut'er down to 18" and put a rail on it then put it on the EE ;). Seriously I envy your FIL , all I ever see at garage sales is rusty Mossbergs or Cil single shots costing more than new. This should make an excellent upland gun if it is tight and the barrels are in good shape

Well, from what I can see in the photos, the gun was used, but not abused.
If the stock is refinished, at least the checkering wasn't sanded over and ruined.
It is a nice old gun, with a respectable name.

I don't see where it was abused. You have a fine shotgun there. Have it checked out by a competent gunsmith for shooting condition. If you don't want to hang onto it, send me a pm.

Damascus barrels. Put this on the antique forum. Chamber size may be 2 and half etc.

That's not in rough shape, that's just the patina of age and use. That is worth a nice restoration job, for sure.

More pics, please, that looks like a lovely gun.

I second the suggestion for gentle restoration.
Someone like Nick Makinson could make it look and function like it should.
Roll some black powder or nitro for black hand loads, add a sunny October day, a good dog, and she'd be ready for more "run-of-the-mill bird and rabbit hunting" as it was meant to be.

mmat,

Beautiful old gun, in great shape. Enjoy!

Why the antique forum?

The shotgun guys are here....

Mark

I would guess the shotgun guys check out both forums, but I had an old Bland and Sons 16 ga. circa 1870 and the advice from people on Antique forum was very comprehensive.

Looks to be in good shape for it's age. Nice old hammer gun.

I would get a good gunsmith to check it over, especially the barrel thickness before you start chasing any birds or rabbits though.
