Want your opinion if dry lube can effectively replace grease on break action guns. By dry lube I mean Dry Lube by Hoppe's #9, for example and similar products that are predominantly white graphite.

In fact yes. Several reasons.
1. Natural curiosity :)
2. Oil gets into the stock softening it.
3. Grease collects particles and can actually act as an abrasive material after a while.
4. Therefore, looking for alternatives...

I don't know that I've ever seen that question asked before. Do you have a particular reason for needing to use a dry lube?

When I was researching what would be best to use on my Beretta O/U, it was pointed out to me that the grease on the hinges performs 2 functions. 1 is to reduce friction on the bearing surfaces, which graphite would also perform. The second is to provide some cushioning effect between the surfaces to help prevent the two parts from hammering away at each other. I don't think a dry lube would do this.

It only takes a minute to wipe off the old grease at the end of a shooting day and apply some fresh stuff the next day out with a q-tip. Grease is cheap, as is a minute or so of my time if it extends the life of my (relatively) expensive shotgun.

Cheers,
Ken

And very knowledgeable reply. Thank you for that.

Tried the dry lobe on the range last week. Worked perfect. The only annoyance, you have to apply it again the next time you go to the range because it all wipes off.
