can i use Large Rifle primer for .270 WSM?

hi guys
i've been using WLRM for my 270 WSM, today i bought 200 WLR primers from a local store by mistake.
can someone please let me know if i can use them with H4350 powder for the 270 wsm? or should i return them & get the Large Rifle Magnum?

how close are you to max loads? i don't mess around with rifles just yet, but i would suspect you could get away with it if your not running near max loads.
 
You'll be fine, a ball powder would benefit from a hotter primer but I use H4350 with CCI 200's and BR2 with no issue.

Just for poops and giggles chrony your new loads to see what you get.
 
I picked up a few thousand WLRM by accident a while ago. I use them in place or regular WLR just fine. As always when changing a component work up.
 
Actually, the fuller the case, the less you need the magnum primer. A mild load will have more airspace and less ignition pressure.

But, to answer your question, 4350 ignites well with a standard primer. With ball powder for a hunting load (where it matters if it does not go bang) I would use the magnum primer.

i'm new to loading, can you tell me more about "ball powder for hunting load" you mentioned?

Sorry. I left a number of dots that had to be connected.

When making plinking ammo, it is not a big deal if the round fires or not. But for hunting, you have to have absolutely guaranteed 100% ignition.

Ball powder is harder to ignite because it tends to have a thicker deterrent coating. If the case is only partly full, it is even harder to ignite. Since ignition is important for hunting, a magnum primer is called for when loading hunting ammo.

By the way, when loading hunting ammo, I think it important to load all the ammo in the magazine and then to cycle it all through the action to make sure it will chamber smoothly. I learned that lesson the hard way.

I don't think H4831 was saying to return them. He was saying that the minor reduction in pressure wasn't worth worrying about. I'd only be worried if you were shooting severely reduced loads for cast bullets then switched from WLRM to WLR primers. Pressure concerns come into play at both ends of the spectrum. But in your case, it wasn't really a concern.
