In a close quarters bear incounter I would favor the marlin, cartridge capacity, faster shot follow ups and handling.

Reaching out past 100 meters I'd go with Ruger in 338mag.

There is also the Ruger Alaskan, and the Savage Brush Hunter. Both come in .375 Ruger, and a couple other choices

I personally would prefer the Marlin, or Savage for the shorter barrels, and would lean towards the Savage in .375 Ruger. ;)

The Alaskan is discontinued. Ruger decided to drop them as they couldn't keep up with demand, or so it seems. I'll keep comments to myself on the Salvage. :)

My vote is for the Marlin 45-70....that new ruger is, to be polite not the best looking gun!!!

Id take the Ruger in .338 Win Mag

250 grain Nosler Partitions are hard to argue with, plus better ergonomics for recoil and scopes.

People seem to handle elephants, lions and hippos with bolt guns OK, so I don't see why it should be such a bad choice in North America.

Like the laminate better than the Hogue. Would probably lose the brake.

There is a lot of win in this comment. :)

Luckily the demand for the .375 H&H is low, so Browing, Winchester and Remington (among others) will be able to keep making them.

Gatehouse...where are you?

I'd say the Guide Gun for sure. It's just such a shame the newer GG's are sh!te compared to the older ones. I kick myself all the time for selling my older but mint GG...and I'll never buy a newer model so I'm SOL until another mint older one appears on the EE.

Coho.....nice Marlin! That is beautiful...
Who built that...looks like some Yost work maybe??

That one's not mine - lol, I wish !! It's a sample from a Grizzly customs :

Mine is a Pre-Rem, JM stamped 1895GS with an XS sights small Ghost ring rear sight and tall front post. I am about to make a similar stock shell holder & matching sling for mine though...
