I have a jungle carbine made in march 1947.
Its in good shape and is a good shooter.
However a previous owner drilled and tapped the receiver for a scope.

Should I leave as is or have it restored?

I would also like to get a bayonet for it. Will a No 4 Mk1 work?

I would attach a picture but I don't have a photobasket.
There must be an easier way.

I take that back...I do have mediafire. giving it a whirl

The receiver being drilled effect it's value, repairing the holes, won't bring back that much value. Unless you really dislike the holes, I would leave it.

No4 bayonet will not work completely different in how they attach to the rifle.

thx...I wouldn't restore it to increase it's value. I'm not concerned about that. I'm not selling it. However I wouldn't want to make it worse.

I have never seen a no. 5 bayonet advertised ...are they out there?

thanks again

one on the EE right now, called No7 Mk1 (baynet model) it is meant to fit the no5 and the No4, discontinued due to them failing on the no4. they also made a version for just the No5

The No7 Mk1 bayonet will not fit a No5 MkI. It will fit a No4, Sten MkV.

Edit: It wont fit a Sterling

There is some original bayonets out there. They go for $150 to $250. There is always the reproduction route. They are usually $80 or so. While they are no the real deal, for the amount that they are used it is worth it. (at least to me as that is what I did)

I'd find proper length screws for the D/T holes , just to cover/protect them .
You might want to set up a scope some day and it's ready for a good solid mounting,
A scoped No5 is a sharp lookin unit ...IMPO

Like Timberlord said, just find some threaded plugs for the holes and leave it at that. It will never be original again and you may want to scope it when your eyes get as lousy as mine though the jungle carbines never had a great rep for accuracy.

They may not have a great rep for accuracy, but I've seen two now (mine and my friends) that shoot in the neighbourhood 2" at 100 yards. They are the tightest groups I've been able to put together with a milsurp. That's also factory ammo.

I have a bayonet for my jungle carbine, the blade is 8" long and the only numbers I can see on it are on the blade at the handguard. they are: RE176 or RF176. on the handle side of the handguard small letters: SA and below that S2. I have no idea what they mean.

thanks everyone

I will put some screws in the holes for now.
Mine gets good groups as well.
RE: the bayonet....thanks for the input. I have something to start with at least. lol

2 basic types fit the JC, one is a normal fixes ring and clip bayonet and the other can have the pommel swivel to fit onto a No4 with the ring hovering a few inches infront of the muzzle. if used on a No4, the bullet can hit the ring sometimes so they were ordered to only be used on the carbine. the later sterling has the same bayonet lug and muzzle size as the jungle carbine

The No7 MkI bayonet does not fit on a No5. You had me thinking I was taking crazy pills so I dug them out and tried. Still, they dont go together.
