Thoughts on the Marlin 795 22LR

Alright, my PAL should be in the mail shortly, I know I'll immediately run off to Cabelas to finally buy myself something for plinking.

So, though I specifically asked about the Marlin 795, I'll start off with my rationale.

I'm set on 22LR, cheap ammo, get me used to firing again (after growing up around firearms, I haven't actually fired one in a decade)

I'd prefer something a bit shorter than longer, many 22s are 40" long, this one's 37"
It has to come in a black finish (looking "tactical" is NOT a requirement, but I have never liked the look of wood-toned firearms)
It has to be semi-auto
It has to be reliable
It has to fire cheaper/bulk ammunition without (too many) problems
It has to be magazine fed
It has to have a rail to (eventually) mount a scope

I'm sure I'll hear a lot of people of people telling me "Ruger 10/22", so, if the Marlin gets shot down, does anyone else have a suggestion?

EDIT: lets put a cash limit of $300 on this, new only, unless the deal is AMAZING :)
 
Personally I'd go for a marlin model 60 in stainless. I'm extremely partial to tube fed mags as they hold a fair amount and don't develop feeding issues with use like detachable mags do. Also I find them faster/easier to load.

Just re-read what you wrote and I'm guessing 'mag fed' means a detachable box mag. So in that case yes the 795 would be a good gun.
 
I recently bought the Marlin 795 and am very happy with it. It's not fussy with ammo and for me it's balanced. Out of about 500 round only 4 rounds were FTE. Just make sure the stock screws are snug prior/after shooting. I noticed that mine were loose out of the box but only found out during the post shooting cleaning.

Bottom line you won't go wrong with it.
 
I too have the Marlin 795,its the best out of the box semi .22 you can get. Magazines work great.Pretty well has a Bulls-eye barrel on it with micro grooving.

The Marlin 795 is the only semi-auto rifle I own, but it didn't make sense NOT to for the price. (and I've owned a 10/22~never again) Common sense dictates that a NEW rifle priced at $150 will have some compromises, but if you know that going in...I still think it's the best semi-auto rimfire out there. The compromises that you experience right away are~terrible rear sight, and a heavy trigger. 10/22s are guilty of the latter, as are 597s...so it's a moot point I suppose. My plan was to put a second-hand, $50 Chinese 3-9x44 scope on mine so the sights didn't matter to me. The trigger was fine for plinking and the gun ran like a top from the start with no FTE (failure to eject) and only 1 FTF (failure to fire) since I've owned it. Blame that on the ammo though.

I'm a huge guy, but like the small stature of the 795 and light weight for hiking. AND...as much as I like the look of the Marlin 60, I FAR prefer a pocket full of box mags. I really like the factory 10-rounders and they're not expensive. If you asked "what gun should I get as my first" and left-out the semi-auto-only, I'd be telling you to get a bolt gun but for a semi and your budget~I'd say you can't beat the 795.

X2 Marlin 795 is a good choice for a lower priced semi-auto box fed rifle.

However my nod also goes to the tube fed model 60SS which I own and like the best.
 
the only thing I don't like about the 7Marlin95 is the trigger,but there are some tutorials to improve it.My 30 year old Marlins have way better triggers.An easy fix for the ''hollow'' plastic stock is ordinary industrial non expanding foam[don't use the EXPANDING foam,it can distort the stock] I ended up putting a Boyds thumbhole stock on it,but I keep the plastic stock to switch back into when I go hunting and want a .22 to pot grouse

I've got a Marlin 795. It's my first gun (got my PAL late last year). It's super accurate. I'm just getting back into shooting and I get 1" groups at 50 yards with the iron sites and 2" groups at 100 yards with the scope and I'm pretty sure the gun could do better. It has never jammed and I feed it cheap CCI Blazer. I shooting it and so does everyone else that tries it!
 
This was my first semi and i still shoot it all the time great gun accurate out of the box .
When you get it strip it clean it and tighten it up as i did find several loose components
Have some issue with remington bulk
But eats federal and blazer and winchester with no issues all day long
10 round mags are available and cheap
And just a note the marlin xt bolt action brother to this gun runs the same mags
Just to give you your next gun idea ...which in my opinion is one of the best 22 bolts for the buck
when it comes to accuracy and quality out of the box
P.S get a SKS as well just because everyone needs one
