Ruger 10/22 Accessories and Importing from USA

I have a few questions concerning accessories for my Ruger 10/22.

1. My plan right now is to purchase a few accessories through Amazon.com and have them shipped to a receiving centre in the USA. I plan to pick drive down to pick them up. Are there any legal implications with this? I know they're just accessories that can be purchased without a firearms license but I'm unsure if there are any laws that I should be aware of that may cause problems. I plan on picking up the following:
   • An aftermarket stock
   • Bipod
   • Rifle Sling
   • An bolt auto release
   • 25 round magazine
   Any recommendations for the accessories mentioned in this list would be appreciated.
   
2. I want to install a bipod onto my rifle. However, there are no rails on the bottle of the rifle. I've seen some bipods that just clamp onto the for-end of the stock but they dont appear to be too reliable. The only solution I'm aware of at the moment is to purchase and aftermarket stock with rails on it (such as one made by Tapco). Is there a better solution?
   
3. I own a Butler Creek Magazine Loader as pictured below. White gunk appears with use within the hopper of the loader. I'm wondering where this gunk is orginating from and what would be the best way to clean it out (the loader is difficult to take apart to clean)

Brownells ships to Canada and if you select the USPS as your shipping option (called Parcel service I think) its only $5.75.

For shipping from the USA, the rule is total order is under $100 and no permit would be needed.

Most, bi-pods can be installed on a sling swivel nut.

That's probably wax residue. I'd just use a cloth.

You can't bring them out of the US legally on your own, period. Your best bet is to go with Brownell's or another dealer that is set up with the proper permits and licenses.

I will order from Brownells then. I am having some trouble choosing the bipod. I have a budget of $20-40 and I want to install it without rails. Will I need to buy swivel studs and would such a bipod interfere with a sling?

I can't recommend a bipod as I don't use them, but I can tell you that you need the swivel studs used for quick release swivels and you need one stud dedicated to the bipod and another stud for the sling to attach to. Some of the Savage rimfire models come with two forearm studs for this purpose.

What I used on my 10/22 Takedowns are the aluminum Promag tactical barrel band replacements. They come with rails so you can put a bipod on the bottom rail. I'd recommend the cheapo UTG tactical bipod that Nutnfancy plugs in one of his vids: model # TL-BP69ST (available from Amazon). If I recall correctly, I may have got the barrel band on Amazon as well. But check CGN sponsor High Caliber Services -- they may have it in stock. Those barrel bands also allow the use of a tactical 2pt sling like the VTAC (padded version). You'll need one of their buttstock adapters, too. A good replacement for the Ruger scope mount is the low-slung Leupold Rifleman mount that allows you to use iron sights when the scope or red dot is off. (Product # L56506 for that mount.) Brownells is the place for spare parts but they are literally run off their feet right now. I have an order that's been tied up there for weeks. Have a look at the Tri-Mag as a substitute for the 25rd mag. It'll give you 30rds and can be split up, if need be, to the original three 10rd mags. The best 25rd mags are the Tactical Innovation composites from Wanstalls which come in every few months (although the USA is having a run on mags so don't hold your breathe).

Higher rings will force you out of a good cheek weld. Go with the lowest rings possible, if the scope has to come off you will still have backup sights. Its your preference really, if its a bench/range gun you can get away with it in .22lr... if your hunting with it or want "field accuracy" go with the lower rings, get a solid cheek weld and connect. It will enforce good habits for firing centerfire rifles.
Additionally, the auto bolt release is so simple, with 20 minutes and a small round hand file it can be done - and it is wonderful. Try er' without, see how you like it. It's fairly quick to change.

You can get the bolt release from a sponsor here: High Caliber Services...or,yes, do it yourself with some filing. I used Warne medium 1" QD rings so I can get the scope off quickly if iron sights are needed. For the Bushnell Trophy Red/Green Dot I have for it, I used UTG 30mm QD rings from Amazon.ca (which is also where I got the red dot). Alternatively, look at the Bushnell TRS-25 on Amazon. It's just as good and more compact -- and mounts directly onto the rig. If you have anything -- scope or red dot -- on the scope mount, you won't be able to use the iron sights unless you go to the see-throughs which raise your cheek weld. I wouldn't go that route but some do.

On the 25rd Tactical Innovations mags -- ouch! Their website shows huge price increases to keep the hordes at bay. They are running waaaaaay behind in production and I doubt we'll see much north of the border into this year. Butler Creek steel lips will have to do you for now. Or look at eBay for the Tri-mag connector and pouches to fit that mag set-up.

Other fancy footwork: KIDD bolt buffer. Buy it from the Canadian rep in Quebec. Better stock and service than the guys in the West. Check for supply first. Easy mod.

Tread lightly!!! Modding 10/22's can be the proverbial "slippery slope!"

As for the scope rings... it is always "best" to get your line of sight as close to the bore as possible, as long as it is comfortable and allows you a good sight picture. For your bipod... you can attach a G36 picatinny rail to the forened or simply instal a swivel stud, this can be done on any stock including the one you cuurently own... stick with your BC-25 Steel Lips mags, buy the smoke colored mags and spray them with flat black Krylon. For a bipod, I can recommend the Leapers SWAT profile (6-9"), you can buy it at Pyramyd Air and they will ship to Canada... if you want it for bench or carhood shooting get the SWAT profile not the Tactical (9-13") profile... if you will be shooting prone, you will want the higher Tactical model. The white gunk in your loader is wax from lubed bullets, spray it with a good dose of WD-40 and wiped it out with a clean rag.

For your stock, I can highly recommend Boyd's... they are drop in fit and nicely finished. You can buy any stock under $100 and have it shipped to Canada, this covers all the 10/22 stocks except the Barracuda ($115) and Tacticool (ATF Export restricted).

For the sling, you can't go wrong with the Quake "The Claw" sling, it looks good and works better, it is comfortable and stays on your shoulder. Bass Pro carries them, but so do many others.

It's unfortunate that their prices are on the high side, total cost of the bolt release shipped would be about $30.
I guess I will pick up a cheap wood stock from them as well.

I had a quick look at a few U.S. sources for the Promag barrel band and it was backordered too. You pays your money (slightly more from a Cdn source) and you gets your product.

I would do the modification myself but I do not have a work bench, vice, or a good selection of files.

I did mine in about 10 minutes with a dremel using nothing more than my hands to hold the part and a flat surface to rest upon. If you were closer I would do yours for the price of a beer after the work was done.

3. Your Carbine has a "Sporter" barrel, which means a slimmer tapered contour, but the sporter looks good in rhe Boyd's .920 channel stocks and gives lots of room for a "free float"... if you choose the SS EVO stock design, the abrrel contour doesn't matter.

You did a really good job on your modifications. Can you let me know what other parts you changed and where you get did you get them?
The barrel looks like something from DLASK.
