I know that the 1911 is a great pistol and I really want to get one. Since I am not a rich man, I don't want to get ripped off on my first pistol. I know that there are some great 1911(sig saure, kimber, browning etc.)
Seeing as some of those are a little out of my price range. Which are great for the price? Which should I avoid like a psyco ex-girlfriend with herpies and a lazy eye?

Kimber is overrated.

Stay away from Para like it was the plague.

If you're on a tight budget, I'd really reccomend looking at the SAM 1911s. They are better quality than the norincos and retail for almost the same. Very minimalistic markings, nice fit and finish. You can even get the 9mm one so that feeding your new baby is less expensive than 45 ACP.

wolverine has a good selection to choose from.

I had my Para 1345 limited for over 13 years , thousands of rounds later, Not one problem, and it is one of my best shooting guns,

i don't understand why you guys hate Para.

there sh!tty Q.C and lack of costumer service... Those P.O.S Canadian forces edition that so many of us had problems with.... I can go on...

The Canadian mades ones are in a league of there own if you can find one....

One to avoid at all costs: AMT Longslide, poor metalurgy mating (earliest stainless steel 1911) and often out of spec' slide.

It will shoot like a dream @25 yards and then suddenly drive you mad with unexplainable split groups!

Had two AMT Long slides in 10mm, both shot like a dream. Only reason I sold them was something else caught my eye.

Every PARA pistol I have ever had my hands on has had some extremely crappy craftsmanship to it and performed horribly with FTF and FTE's.

Glad I didn't buy one to find that out. Used 7 so far and were all poo.

Everyone has differing experiences. Met a guy at an eastern club with the same calibre (45 ACP) & model handgun. His opinion was the same as mine. Out of spec' front end of the slides were very common with the AMT Longslide Hardballer. Mine even started chucking the front bushing directly out the front end, towards the end of my ownership. Kind of disconcerting to say the least.

I have had great times with Armscore Rock Island armory for budget 1911's. They are made in the Philippines plant, and use pure colt dies and jigs. They were made for the Filipino Guerrillas to take care of the imperial Japanese army regulars, and they haven't stopped making their same high quality parts too.

I wouldn't touch US made PARA's unless I was doing a frame up build, Canadian made was great Quality control, American sad to say not so much. AMT stands for american made trash, another throw away gun.
I have never owned a Nork, but have heard great things of their quality of materials, but fit and finish is lacking. So if you are interested in doing some work on mating the slide to the frame and put in kimber+ guts in it I think you'd have a sweet gun on your hands.

I personally went with the sig, but I got a screaming good deal on them (got a pair of range kits at cost).

So in conclusion, most Filipino made 1911's= Quality and affordable.

X2 I own one of these as well and this Ticks like a Timex watch. Not all Para's are junk as suggested from other users.
The Canadian Made Model was the best, but the quality went south when the company moved from Canada. Just my take on this gun.
