I remember being in your shoes when I got all OCD about getting the cosmoline off, and thought it would be a great idea to take the recoil spring assembly apart. WOW that spring is a loooong sucker, ain't it? And that little part in the middle that retracts into the tube when you're trying to force the spring back down? Priceless...
Anyway, I can't remember exactly how I macgyvered it all back together, but I do vaguely recall working the piece upside down or on its side to keep that inner part extended, or perhaps I jammed it somehow with something. The trick is to retract the spring bit by bit by squeezing/holding the coils together, and having something to hold it in place while you make your next attempt. Repeat it enough times to get the retainer on, and you're golden.
Another good tip sourced online:
The guide is easy to get back together. Simply insert the cleaning rod into the hollow end to keep the small part of the guide from collapsing. It's comically easy this way.
Take the cleaning rod and hold it vertically, place the hollow end of the spring rod over the cleaning rod. Slide spring on and compress by hand. Attach retainer.
