I have both and its tough for me to choose just one from the 2. They are both made by the same manufacturer and both are comfortable to shoot. my choice would be the .338

I have my .50 reloads down to roughly $3.45 each (ready to shoot) the trick is to buy in bulk and work with the cost savings from there. I have found deals every now and then on this forum and others.
I am up to 12x reloaded brass on my first batch of 100. I haven't even touched my additional batches of brass.
The .50 is a blast to shoot and not as stressful on the body as one would think providing that you have a really efficient muzzle brake and your not on the top end node of your reloads.
Hitting targets at great distances with accuracy does give you a partial chubby

start up costs for reloading is expensive as are the accessories
everywhere you go you draw attention some positive - some negative
everybody wants to shoot it or ask to buy a round off you
they hate when you shoot it at a range due to how loud the report is
hunting sucks with a .50 unless you have dogs that you don't mind feeding the 50lbs of smashed meat or you don't mind cleaning all of the animals insides off of its outsides lol
heavy to lug around at 31lbs loaded with scope, bipod and sling
expensive initial investment and expensive feed cost for its use

.338 reloads are cheaper with no question
I am up to 18x reloaded brass on my first batch of 100.
less cost to everything but still effective at great distances. buy in bulk and receive even more cash savings
.338 AI is a better round
hunting with a .338 is effective yet not abusive to the animal with regards to ballistic damage and recoverable meat and not regarding to the shock of the kill (ouch)

kind of a waste at short range. Depends where you hunt. I use mine in the foothills from valley to valley in open areas and prairie but never in the bush
kind of a novelty when compared to the 6mm, 7mm, .300 and .308 when it comes to hunting in Alberta at typical range of use and weight
heavy to lug around at 26lbs loaded with scope and sling
expensive initial investment and moderate feed cost for its use
The above is short and quick just for reference but not complete by any means. I was lucky and fortunate to be able to obtain both of my rifles otherwise I would have stuck with my .308 and be happy with it, but would have still wanted the above. You're in a tough spot! Buy the .50 and wonder if it was the right choice or buy the .338 and will always wonder what the .50 would be like. Check out the forum EE and look for a deal there or on the shelves at dealers.
Hats off to you and good luck!!!!
