Mossie Maverick 88 for clays?

my buddy and i shoot clays all the time we throw our own, i dont know about the club here in fsj but im sure people at most clubs wouldnt like a 8.5 shooting :p ive hit tons of clays with my single shot cut down to 18.25 inches and i hit them fairly regularly with my 8.5 grizzly. expect to miss a bunch at the begining, having some one watch and try to tell you where your shooting (too much lead/ not enough) helps

Hand thrown clays is one thing,but a round of regulation trap or skeet is another. If you can consistently hit 20+ targets at both trap and skeet with an 8.5" open cylinder, you are a skilled shooter. If you can do it with an 18.25" open cylinder, you are a skilled shooter.
 
I second a previous posters comments about shooting what you have, and have fun doing it !

That said, pump action's rarely show up at clay/skeet competions that I have been part of or have seen.

At least here in the UK you would never, ever see one at a shooting ground.

They obliviously have their place , but IMHO it is not for shooting clays.

I am looking to get a Super Black Eagle 11 for wildfowling, which I think is a more appropiate use for a pump action.

If you look at any of the coverage of the Olympics last year you will not see any pump actions being used for clays. There are lots of reasons, heavier barrels, more robust actions, etc.

These guys know alot more than I do, so I'm happy to follow their lead in this regard. They also rarely shot anything less than 28"" more usually 30".

Ignore the old gentlemen who will turn their noses up at you because you aren't using a k80, and proceed to have some fun.
What is a shotgun??? Not much more than a piece of pipe. THe Mossy will dust them as well as any other.
 
Any shotgun that goes boom is suitable for clays. The only problem is that it may not be as efficient at busting clays than other equipment that was specifically made for the job.

You three main concerns here are:
1. Weight -- skippy and hard kicking after a long day busting clays.
2. Pump -- though manageable but still difficult for some double shots.
3. Short barrel -- skippy swing.

I know of one straight shooter who breaks 25/25 quite often with his Mossberg Mariner with short barrel. But it's him and he's a good shot.

Go to your club and take a look with what people shoot there to avoid embarrassment when you show up with your Maverick. Also always a good idea to talk to the club manager or instructor there and seek recommendation.
 
Don't ever be afraid to show up at a trap & skeet field with whatever shotgun you happen to have. If it is not suited to the game at hand, most likely somebody will let you use their gun to see how a better-suited shotgun performs. Yes, 18" barrels are really loud and annoying to some, but they will work just fine at skeet. Trap, not so much. But if other guys don't want to shoot with you, it's more likely due to the noise factor than them turning their noses up at your gun.

As an analogy, you could drive across the country in a 1971 Pinto. You could also do it in a 2013 Porsche, or even a low-mile 1990 Cadillac. Each will do the job, but each very differently. The choice is yours.

i would like to say im a skilled shooter, but i would be lieing. there is for sure a difference, ive only shot at a actual skeet/trap range once. (with a over under) i added my .02$ just to say it can be done and if your out there to have fun vs break more clays than anyone else, then why not.
