Bought my very first rifle this week, and after having only ever fired military stuff in the past decided I couldn't pass up an opportunity to buy an 1952 SKS that almost looks brand new. Spent a few hours removing the cosmoline slime off it and can't wait to fire it some time in the future. Does anyone know why the oil can is split into 2 sides? is one for vodka?
Just got to figure out how to explain my purchase to the wife!

I would include a picture of it, but I have no idea how!

1 side for solvent, other for oil. Also the only way the Soviets could make something look like Mickey Mouse and get away with it.

-upload the pictures on to photobucket
-after its uploaded select a picture, there will be a bunch of links on the right side
-click on "IMG code" as it will automatically copy the link
-paste in the forum

and done!

You can use other websites, but I find photobucket the easiest to use.

ok, lets try this.....

Very nice.

Is the top piece of wood laminate as well, or is it a solid piece?

I'm curious about how the cosmoline grease affects laminate stocks. Does it soak into the wood very much, or can you pretty much just clean it off and you're done? With solid wood it really soaks in and it's a pain to get rid of.

Here's some info about oil bottles for you: http://browningmgs.com/OilBottles/OB.htm

The "H" side is for oil and the other side is for solvent. The Russian Cyrillic "H" is sort of like an "N" in English and it stands for "Neft" which is oil. (In Russian it is written нефть)

Go to google translate and put in "alkaline" from English to Russian and you'll see the W looking thing...

I think the top piece is solid, but there isn't much wood there for the cosmoline to soak into, it didn't take much to get the goop out of the stock, but I bet everyone is different.

Interesting. They do make laminate upper wood as well. I don't know what is considered to be the correct type to go with a laminate stock, but I've seen a lot of pictures of laminates without the laminate upper. Have another look at my post. I added some more info.

That looks sweet! Let us know how she shoots.
Can you let us know where you got it from...was it a sponsoring vendor or somewhere else?

that's funny. I just got my SVT 40 yesterday and was going to ask which was the vodka side too. Happy Blasting!

It was from a local store close to home, and from what I've seen not a bad price either. Kinda had to be to get it into the house undiscovered! I'm looking forward to being able to try it out sometime!
