M&P 9mm range kit vs M&P .40 range kit

as the title states i am deciding between these two firearms.

i have money burring a hole in my pocket because i sold some of another hobby. my wife has now given me the go ahead to get a new gun. this will be my first center fire pistol and i have fired both calibers. i really enjoy the way the 40 feels when fired but i am cheap as well. the main use for me will be for plinking and learning to shoot better. so i was wondering all of your opinions and i do know that everyone has an opinion but im open to hear them. i have searched but i enjoy hearing my fellow gunnutters on the topic.

also is there anywhere these are in stock i am in northern Saskatchewan.

i would like to get into reloading but then its more money right do you save quite a bit when reloading or is it just cheaper to shoot more? is it cost effective to reload 9mm?
 
I personally like the .40 better than the 9 mm. I have had a bad experience with the 9 though. The .40 S&W to reload isn't a hell of a lot more than other rounds, once you past the initial cost to get into reloading. The .40 is right up there with the .45 ACP in some loads. I think the future is leaning towards the .40 as well. But today cost of factory ammo is cheaper for a 9 mm calibre gun. With the .40 S&W you can use the dies to re-load 10 mm which is a round a little hotter than a .357 Mag or about the same as the .357 mag. A revolver like the S&W 610 shoots both .40 and 10 mm. so that is too cool, rare gun though.
 
To get into reloading you need to spend, I guess at least $1000. You need the dies that are worth around $50 or more each, get new and get carbide. The kit I think is around $500 and there are many extras that you will need in addition to the kits. I would say DO NOT go with a automatic reloading system to start. Get a hand job to start. Also read a lot and best to have a buddy invest a few hours with you to teach you the ins and outs. You need a few reloading manuals the manfu. specific ones are just for their ammo so not as good for you. You need some brass, new is better than used and range brass can be trouble. You need to get some powder as well and primers and a primer install tool. Best if you can find a great gun retailer that will spend a bit of time with you and sell you the right stuff the first go around. I broke, or did not follow almost every statement I have made above, except the auto reloading tool, I bought a Lee 3 die turret unit and it is great, Lee stuff is good in general. To start find a couple books or read one of the reloading manuals you will need anyway. And get a helpful friend. There is a reloading group here and they will help.

Frankly you can make many mistakes reloading. It isn't like dropping your hat and hitting the ground. You need to be careful, knowledgeable and attentive and luck isn't a bad thing. There are at least 4 brands of dies and a few different flavors of each I think. It would be best to stick to a brand, say lee 3 dies sets and go that route. I have all the brands, most bought used and have been buying new as I get pi#sed off with the used s#yte. One of the troubles with different brands is the different dies have 2 functions and each brand can be different. For example I normally would punch out the used primer first but some die brands you would size the brass with a different die, punch out and flare next with the other die.

If your unlucky you can blow your gun all to h#ll and maybe loose an eye or finger. I would reload less than max powder for a while and document each batch, which I never did well. A chronograph isn't a bad thing, mine is still in the box unused.

Not trying to scare you off reloading. It is a fun hobby. It takes a lot of time to do right (or wrong) and will save you money in the long haul. Just start slow one calibre and learn. I tried to start with many calibres at once, that isn't the best way to go.
 
i have done alot of reading on reloading and i am fairly prepared for the work and attentiveness involved. i think it will be an enjoyable hobby just have to wait for kits to go on sale.

thanks ill check them out. it kills me that wss sells the kits for 599 and most other places are 50+ more cabelas is 150 more yikes. i guess thats why wss is sold out. i think i will go with 40 and order a 9mm barrel and mags.
 
Only has 40 s&w left at PGT.......$650....but he might price match if you found it cheaper somewhere else. Darren is great to deal with!
 
they have (as of a day or so ago) both 9mm and 40 at Shooting CENTRE in Calgary... $625 for the range kit w/ 4 mags. worth a look!

That's not the only 'strange' going on in that post, in fact most of that post is crap, the hand job being the only solid suggestion in the whole post - as long as it isn't your 'buddy' providing it.
Back on topic, OP get the 9mm, cheap, relatively plentiful ammo, low recoil and since the M&P was designed as a 40, the 9 is way over built, which makes it last- and believe me you'll spend more on ammo than you did on the gun in no time.

i pulled the trigger if you will (im sure that joke has never been made) the on a M&P 40 range kit from Calgary shooting center. paid 625 before tax but the kit came with a 4th mag. now comes the waiting game and attempting to find a 9mm barrel for kicks and giggles.

Bought thursday shipped friday got it today(monday). Now just to find ammo to shoot. Thanks for all your imput
