I want to put a fixed power 4 x scope on a 303. What would be a good hunting scope that will handle the recoil without breaking the bank? Nothing fancy, just something that will do the job.

How much money does it take to break your bank? Leupold and Weaver make fixed power scopes still and I think Nikon does as well. As a less expensive option, look for a used Weaver or Leupold M8 on the EE.

I saw a Leupold M8 - 4x on the EE here a few days ago for less than $200.00
Excellent value, and a very good scope.
4x is a good choice, as well.

I have 2 Leupold m8 4x scopes , one is nearly 30 years old and has been mounted on everything from .22's to a .338 with no problems, plus you have a lifetime warranty in the unlikely event you will need it.

I have had great success with the loopy vx2 fixed 6, I know sometimes a 4x makes more sense, but I have been shooting through the 6's for so long I can't ever see using a 4x, and I have an excellent working 60's era 4x redfield.

The majority of my "hunting" rifles wear the excellent Leupold 6x42.
6x is plenty, even for shots way out there, The 42mm Objective gathers light well.
Never had an issue, even on the 338 Win Mag.

I'd agree wholeheartedly but my only issue is that I hate 40mm objectives with a passion. The older 6x Leupold used to have a 33mm objective as well (if memory serves) and I liked it very much.

They make the FX 11 in 6 X 36, and its a decent scope. The FX-3 6 x 42 mounts in the same low rings, and though it probably isn't twice the scope it feels like it sometimes. I've got both.

Do you mean twice the quality or twice the size or twice the weight?

I have the 6x36mm and am curious about the 6x42mm.

Why not take a look at the NC Star Courage 4x? I'm thinking you could find one for about $30. If it doesn't pan out, it's no biggie. If it works, you've got extra cash for ammo!

I meant higher quality. The Fx-3s compare to the FX 11s like a VX-3 compares to a VX-2 but being a fixed power it's optically better than all of them. The FX-3 6 X 42 has got to be the easiest scope to get along with that I have ever owned. Your 6 X 36 (and mine) is very good, its just not in the same league and is priced accordingly.

On weight, the FX 11 is 10 ounces and the FX-3 is 13.6 ounces. Not enough to matter to me.

This scope is a very good choice. They go at a very good price and are longer than a lot of modern scopes so will fit easier on a longer action.
