Looking for .44-40

Hey,
The Bullet Barn in BC just started making their own ammo and .44-40 is one that they offer for a reasonable price. No mention on what pressures or velocity these rounds are loaded to on the website. I emailed them to ask them and I will check my email at work tomorrow to see what they say. I would like some too. Preferably the original 1300 ft/s loading though.

I checked out their pricing...its actually still pretty steep. Over $21 a box for 9mm with lead bullets, over $30 a box for .45 acp with lead bullets. I can get jacketed stuff for about half that so I'm not sure why they are charging so much. The .44-40 is $33 a box. Around $10 or so less than factory. Add courier fees for delivery and you are at the cost of factory. Not much advantage there. I'll grab some if I see them at show to try, but otherwise they are priced too high.
Yeah, I agree that their other stuff is pretty expensive for no good reason. This is the only place in Canada that I have seen that actually has .44-40 cowboy action or otherwise so they have the advantage of that to contribute to the price. I did talk to Ryan at SFRC a week or two ago and he said he had some coming in from the US soon. I don't know if it is cowboy or regular loadings though. Keep your eyes out on the SFRC website for it to compare pricing with the Bullet Barn. You can always give Ellwood Epps a call as I talked to them months ago about this loading and they were out at the time, but were going to get more eventually.
I am going to get into reloading this round very soon as it is Very cheap to do so. Wolf reloading sells the cast lead bullets at a rediculously cheap price, something like $28.00 for 1000 rounds if my memory serve me well. The bullet barn sells the brass as I imagine others do as well. Power and primers are next to nothing so all you really are paying for down the road is the brass that should give you 5-10 reloads if you keep them mild.

Ok, I got this back from the bullet barn:
The load for that ammo (.44-40) is meant for pistols with a 6” barrel at 850 fps, and would only get up to 1000 fps. with a maximum load. If we did a load for a rifle, it would get about 1200 fps

I have a Winchester lever action Model 1892 in 44-40. I have not fired this gun in a very long time. When i did I used Winchester factory loads, I believe they came in boxes of 50. I once read the factory ammo was kept at lower power in consideration of all the older guns out there, like mine.
Is that still the case? Or should I be looking at custom loads for use in an older gun?

Winchester has ammo specifically built for Cowboy Action loads, which would be suitable for the older guns. It used to be in a rather simple brown box with the Winchester horse/rider logo, but they have changed to a silver/red box similar to the other Winchester stuff. Difference being the Cowboy action stuff is marked as such on the package as well(little cowboy boot)
