Tried out my new savage .17hmr this weekend and while it is fairly accurate and a blast to shoot there were too many misfires for my liking. Don't think it was the ammo as it happened with both types I tried and all of them went bang the second time. This leaves light strikes I guess but not sure whether its the firing pin or a spring. Any suggestions? I've also read that having the accutrigger set too light can cause this. Anyone else heard this? This rifle is brand new so not sure whether I should return it to Cabelas while I can, send it directly to savage, or clean it up real good and try it again when I get a chance.

What ammo was it? because if it was the winchester stuff it might not be the rifle. I have had multiple winchester rounds in the same box not fire. when I opened some of them they had no powder in them at all. Give the bolt a good blast of solvent in case there is some schmutz in there. If it still light strikes take it back, it could be a short firing pin.

I had a friend who had the same issue. He made his trigger pull a bit stiffer on his accutrigger (1/4 lbs more IIRC) and the problem disappeared.

If the trigger is set too light that can happen. If the trigger breaks before the Accurelease, the firing pin will be blocked. This is from the Savage manual:

WHEN THE SEAR IS BLOCKED BY THE ACCURELEASE TM (SEE FIGURE 14), THE FIRING PIN
IS RESTRAINED WITHIN THE BOLT ASSEMBLY, PREVENTING IT FROM HITTING THE
PRIMER. THE „CLICK‟ THAT IS HEARD IS THE ACTUAL SEAR BEING BLOCKED BY THE
ACCURELEASE TM, NOT THE FIRING PIN!

When it happens, open the bolt and look at the cartridge, if it has no mark on the rim then that is what is happening. It has also happened to me if I don't pull the triggger back in line with the bolt, that is, if I pull at an angle.

My new mako 17 had the same problem fail to fire. I just adjusted the trigger pull and all is working great now with hornady v-shock 17 gr.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll just give it a real good cleaning and maybe tighten the trigger and see if that solves it. a collector, did you have any marks on the rim or did the pin not strike at all before you adjusted the pull when you were having issues?

It had slight strike marks on the rim of every one that FTF. I bought the gun in December and I just got to shoot it this past weekend and it had the FTF issues. I seen your thread and tried the advice given by jonyork it solved the FTF and of course i turned it the wrong way lol but you could hear it strike lighter than before while on the bench. gun works great now shot 100 rounds and perfect.
P.S. thanks jonyork

I had the same problem with a new 22 mag savage and it was because I oiled my bolt I cleaned it with action cleaner and put no oil and vuwalla it works perfect

My buddy has one that gave him trouble off the start. Seems it was sensitive to any leftover shipping oil, after a good cleaning and rounds down the pipe it's been great.
