So Im wanting to upgrade the stock on my 700 tactical in .223. Someone has offered me an HS Precision M24 short action (.308) and the option of getting the AI detachable mag upgrade and bottom metal for a bit more money. Id like to go for the upgrade, but its set up for .308. I guess I would need to buy a .223 mag to go with this eh, since I dont suppose that you could use .223 in a .308 magazine? I would hope the bottom metal would still be useable, since its still short action. I could always just buy the bare stock and use the bottom metal from my 700 tactical stock if need be, although I like the idea of a DM.

Thoughts? I'm still very new at this Precision shooting stuff.

If it is bottom metal for short action AI mags, all you need is a new .223 mag. Runs about 40 bucks. Unfortunately the 308 mags won't work but if it comes with 308 mag, sell the mag on the EE and you can probably buy 2 new ones for your 223.

c4pyro is 100% correct. Get a .223 mag and you are good to go.

Your current bottom metal will not likely be compatable with the new stock if it is inletted for AI DM. DO the upgrade with the bottom metal, flog the 308 mag and pick up a couple new 223 mags. You will really like that upgrade!

PS- I am looking for another 308 AI mag, let me know if you do the upgrade, I might be interested in buying yours.

For price on the mag, depends if its an 5 or 10 round mag but I would say somewhere between 70-90 bucks depending. That's what I sold some spares for last time unless prices have drastically changed, which they generally don't. New ones are about 80-100 so...the 223 mags are about 40.

If this stock was used on a 700 SA in .308, there should be no problem dropping my barrel and action from a .223 700 tactical in it eh? Stupid question, but I want to be certain.

I asked and the bedding has been already stripped out. What would be a good price to pay for a very good condition M24 stock with CDI bottom metal and one 5 round .308 AI mag?

Is anyone else realizing the a true M24 stock would be long action and he is trying to put it on a short action gun?

*never mind, he said short action right in the post, oops :p
