450/400 nitro

Hell, if this is a wedding gift to yourself get the Merkel or Heym double!!! It may be the last rifle you'll ever get!!! OR.....in the future you can say "see, honey this new gun I bought is just a pittance at 2 grand compared to the 15 grand I spent on the Heym, when we got married" LOL
Congats on the marriage and the new gun.

If I could manage a double outta this deal I would. But she's paying for it. The stones for her engaugement ring cost $2600. Its to be set in her grandmothers old ring. It didn't come with stones so the deal is I get a of equal value. $2000 for the gun $600 for the leupold scope. I thought at one time prophet river had them for $1300 or $1500 awhile ago

When we met I set the rules. Hunting then guns then close friends then girlfriend. Wife slides her up 1 category lol and she's willing to settle with that

I didn't mean to cast aspersions on the .450/400. It sounded like I was and I didn't really mean too, just being the devils advocate.

The .450/400 was THE all around cartridge for awhile and it is definitely in the Dangerous Game class, unlike the .405 which needs some coaxing and better bullets.

It's interesting that the .450/400 still has a lot of supporters, would you guys attribute that to fair numbers of "reasonably priced" double guns available for it?

Prophet River had a few, some were the Lipsey's African Adventure with slight upgrades for about $1500, and I think he had regular old 1-H's for $1100-1200.
Unfortunately it sounds like Ruger won't be making many No.1's this year so they can focus on other production.
Your best bet might be either to buy from somewhere like Gunbroker and have him import it, or possibly he could source one for you.

Yep, you set the rules right up til the "I DOs". Then we'll see..............................

I was about to cast dispersions on the .450/400 (400 at 2100) as being anemic compared to say a .470 or .500 NE, but clearly a 400 at 2400 from a modern rifle is another matter entirely. While I'm not a Boddington fan, neither do I entirely dismiss his opinions, and he is/was of the opinion, that for buffalo sized game, the .450/400 is a wonderful cartridge and should be more popular than the elephant cartridges. Maybe so, but the thought of a .50/580 at 2150 still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when I think back to that day we managed to get in amongst a herd in the grass.

In terms of a .416, I was totally impressed by the power, trajectory, and versatility of the .416 Rigby in my #1 (a 350 gr X or Magtip over 102 grs of H-4350 for 2850). As a result I was never taken with the Remington version which I still believe could have been so much more had it been brought out on the Ultramag case. Still, the .416 Remington has performed well on the world stage, equalling if not surpassing the original Rigby performance, and it seems reasonable to expect the .450/400 in a modern rifle like the #1 to match that level of performance.

FWIW Boddington and his wife both used the #1 in 450-400 with very good success in Africa. I think that Donna must be a but tougher than Brittany.

I'm a huge 416 Rigby fan so you'll never hear me say anything bad about it. Standard loadings are mild recouping when you get away from the bench and they match the standard 30-06/180gr trajectory pretty closely. If you feel the need you can stuff that big case full of powder and go to work in 416 Weatherby territory. Or top it with a heavier bullet and have something that penetrates like a runaway F350 plowing through the front wall of a mobile home. Purest win!

I've never fired a 505 Gibbs though I have a sick desire to own one.

Come to think of it, doesn't back40sniper have a Kreighoff double in .450-400? Charlie, are you out there?

Might I also add that it's easier to begin forgiveness than to get permission.

Go to TradeEx and have a squint at their double rifle Page. You might just convince yourself that two tubes are better than one.

Sorry, late to the party. Yep, have a K-gun in 450-400 and love it. Perfect balance of power and weight. They only reason to go heavier caliber, IMHO, would be if chasing elephants. The 450/400 works for everything else and isn't too overgunned for most. Or so I have read on the internet as I don't have the money to shoot "everything" with it!

Go for it! I bought several in .405 when they first came out, and reamed them out for the 450/400, .........and along with a few othesr, convinced Ruger to get a reamer as everything else would be the same.
It was a virtually "dead" cartridge for years, due to the lack of components, but nowadays everyone is chambering for it, .....lots of components now available, and it'll do the job on anything if you're up to it. Lots of my hunters have tried mine and then returned home and bought their own.

But it didn't kill the buffalo. ;)

But it did take out the tree!

OH great now we're going to need a tree defense thread!!!! EXACTLY what kind of tree was it, was it an old tree or a juvenile tree, was it during the seeding season or the off season, was it a CNS hit or just a vital zone hit, how long did it take the tree to succumb to the shot, did the tree succumb to the shot or is the tree still standing around as though nothing happened? All these questions need answers before we can actually determine if you in fact did "take out" the tree or not.:rolleyes::)

It's been a long boring winter, what can I say.............

You shoulda seen da trees I moided with a 320gr cast bullet out my 450/400NE. Took a crack at a doe in a cutblock, thought I had a big enough hole to shoot thru, thin poplars, nope, bullet killed about 8-9 trees, never made it to the doe.
450-400 is far more versatile than a 405, Like Ruger #1 said, a 210 hornady, to a 400gr barnes banded solid, and a nice selection of stuff in between. From cheap plinker loads to elephant loads at Rigby velocities, it will do it all in a gun like the #1. I will likely buy a DR in 450/400, to go with my #1 next year. It's way too much fun.

Why wait? talk to A-zone now!

Agreed. It's a beautiful rifle he's selling -- and I say that as someone who has both held and fired it. It's definitely a step up in terms of fit and finish compared to my Merkel 140AE double, which is really saying something. I love my Merkel and will never sell it, but the V-C he's listing is really quite something to behold. If I didn't already have a .450-400 double, I'd be buying his.
