Well I was surfing the web when I ran into the video below were they used a XCR magazine in a SKS. Anyone know if there is a kit out there to do this?

It won't let me embed the video because it's blocked doing that...

There was a thread where mdmaroon showed his process but it got locked down because two people came in and trolled it and one of them was a dealer. Threads get locked when a dealer who pays advertising dollars reveals certain personality traits and antagonizes the community. There is no kit. You have to modify the receiver to take the mag, you have to modify the bolt to cycle through the mag, you gotta modify the mag hold-open and figure out a mag catch solution. I'm in the middle of that project and will be posting instructions once I'm done, along with pictures and some measurements to make it easier to follow.

Its like the duckbill magazines then were you have to hold the bolt open to open it I wonder if someone could make a houseing for it that snaps in or replaces a few parts would be intresting if it could be done...

Not sure about the duckbill mags, but using XCR mags, the bolt hold-open solution is pretty simple. 5min on the belt-sander, 1 hole, 1 tap, 1 screw.

I ended up TIG welding the screw in place because lock tight wasn't holding it. If you don't have access to a TIG welder, you might be able to braze or solder it. It's pretty important that you screw it in to exactly the right depth, so don't weld it until you are sure it is perfect.

That is pretty sad a dealer trolled the thread into getting it locked out......guess they don't like the fact you can buy a cheap low profit SKS now and get 10 rounds in it instead of buying a $1000 CZ858 or $2400+ XCR lol.

I'll measure how far and how high.. Might even be able to get away with using a pop-rivet. No access to a TIG-welder. Any reason as to why another type of welder wouldn't do the trick like MIG or stick? It might be easier for me to find someone with one of those.

That's why, when I post up the instructions, I'll ask the mods to turn it into a locked sticky. That way no trolling will shut it down. That dealer was a bigtime Fudd with a definite Wendy gene going on. Not a good fit for this site lol Fortunately, he's a minority figure. The rest of our dealers are a great bunch, haven't had a real bad experience with any of them.

TIG is just a lot more accurate. I could take two pieces of wire from a MIG welder and weld them together end to end using a TIG welder.

A stick or MIG welder could work for this job, but you'll probably have to grind down some excess weld after. Not a big deal.

I have another tip for you. You know the tiny spring that pushes the bolt catch down? My bolt catch wouldn't work properly until I cut it about 1mm shorter. The coils were binding and making it stick. Only do it if you have that problem.

And then?

My SKS is languishing in my safe - how about them photos to encourage me to get it back into 10 round configuration?

Hey y'all newtime member, longtime shooter and soon going to be handed down an SKS when my license clears.

The real questions I have are: how compatible will these mods be with aftermarket stocks? I've seen adapters on other threads but they also require machining and look kind of ugly and bulky IMO. Also the problem I saw on the aforementioned YouTube videos is that there is some difficulty in loading from a stripper clip (although one would imagine it to be simpler).

Any ideas/advice from folks more experienced with modification?

Couldn't figure out a good way to keep the mag positioned right and then Red Liner came up with his magwell adapter. Waiting to test his more elegant solution and if it works, at least I'll offer some pics and guidance on preparing the receiver, the trigger group, the bolt and the hold-open. If for whatever reason those don't work, I'll figure something out, probably with the AR mag catch I got from Brownells.

Aftermarket stocks would most likely require some material removal but it would be minor. As for the difficulties with the clip, they were due to an error in mag reassembly (md took it apart for cleaning), but iirc, upon reassembly they were feeding just fine from the clips.

Thanks for the advice.

Would a capable gunsmith be capable of making the required adjustments for me? I don't have the experience and don't want to abuse my gun.

Who is the dealer?

This mod/conversion totally peaks my interest.

I have a crate of 7.62X39 ammo sitting on the shelf but no SKS rifle.

I have an XCR-L in 6.8SPC so already have a few of the XCR-L 7.62X39 mags.

I would buy an SKS's if I could find someone that would convert it for me.

I hardly have enough time to reload now definitely do not have time to do a conversion like this.
