30/378 Enough for big bears?

I say use the 22LR and then make sure you wear a Kevlar hunting jacket...

Sorry... I don't think LR has the proper penetration for bears... it will pass straight through and dump most of its energy on the other side... I would use a .22 short or CB... choose a heavy load, something moving at 700+ fps... make sure it is an HP for rapid expansion and doubled frontal section, with at least 99.9% weight retention... also, keep the camera rolling on this hunt...
It would work fine, providing you can handle the recoil. My preference would be .338/9.3/.375 though.
It'll work just fine using heavy bullets and keep your ranges down to ..............oh, let's say no more than 5-600 yds!!!!!!!!!!! On your scale of 1-10 it would fall anywhere between 0-7 depending on load and bullet.

I prefer to use 110gr Hornady spire points in the 30/378. The hyper hydrostatic shock is mo' betta.

Put it this way: there isn't a single game animal in North America that has not been taken by the good old .30-30. I would go so far to say that there isn't a single game animal in the entire world that hasn't been humanely taken by a .30-30, or an equivalent if .30-30 is not available. Shot placement and knowing your maximum range is far more important than the cartridge in your rifle.

With a compound bow!....Wowsers!! - you got way bigger kuhoonahs than I do. My knees would have been rattling once it got within 30 yards of me.
Back to the OP's goofy question; (still trying to decide if he's serious, or just being a retard) Why would you consider such a stoopidly large rifle for a measly N. American bear? For the last 30 years, people have been dispatching them on a regular basis with none other than the lowly 30-30. A 303, 30-06, 7mm or 300 mag (and everything else in between) will do just fine. To buy ammo for your Wby 30/378 it costs $150 for a box of 20 and that's just silly also! Hope you have a strong shoulder.

I won't argue with that. However that still comes down to skill, or lack thereof. If we want to get really technical, I doubt there is any single species alive on earth that have not been taken with a .22 LR. Obviously the less power your round has; the more accurate your shot placement needs to be, but any cartridge is lethal when it hits the right location.
Now I feel bad... your question was ligit enough and you deserved a "non-tongue-in-cheek" answer... Yes, 30-378 will take bears with the right bullet and good placement... but there are more ideal caliber's if those are an option. Gatehouse makes a good point about the amount of powder used... going to .338, .375 etc... opens up a better bullet range for minimal additional powder... less in some cases. I don't know if your question was just curiosity or you are actually going on a hunt (I strongly suspect the former)... but if you read between the stupid responses on this thread (my own included) there are enough clues. AHA this made me laugh.. But yea in all seriousness a 30-378 is more then enough for bears. Specially N.American bears. And I really wouldn't want to be paying over $150 for 20 shells. So take that into consideration as well. Cheers!
