So I want to knock off the flash suppressor so I can work on the gas system, maybe add a USGI flash hider so it can ping etc.

I took out the set screw, and the castle nut as expected is stuck on tight, wont' move. I don't have the castle nut pliers, so I'm interested in hearing what other options there are. So far I've found (hammer and punch method, hot/cold method, soak with Kroil/Liquid Wrench, needle nose pliers).

Mine is soaking in Liquid Wrench at the moment, going to leave it overnight.

Anybody tried heating the castle nut so it expands a little and the solidified grease seal breaks allowing for easier loosening?

you can make castle nut pliers with some C-clamp vise grips and a angle grinder/dremel. just work the contact points of the vise grips till you get teeth that will lock into the castle nut

Where do you live....anywhere near Pembroke Ont ?? If so I can help you out .

You can make some yourself if you want as the OP said.

I tried liquid wrench and heating before tapping, but it didn't budge. So to not risk damaging the castle nut I put the hammer down lol, which was probably the right thing to do. Will call the gunsmith and see if he has pliers or an idea.

Also, do USGI castle nuts fit on the metric threading of Chinese barrels?
