Weekend buys

Was not planning on buying anything this weekend but ended up with two rifles, MAS 36-51 and a Polish M44. The MAS is in decent shape, very different rifle with bolt position. The M44 is like new still has cosomoline all over the metal.

I'm undecided on whether to leave the M44 as is or clean it and shoot. I bought a Romanian M44 last weekend that has been used so I do have a shooter. Would it affect the value of the Polish M44 by shooting it?

The MAS I want to shoot, not sure if I should reload or just find some ammo. 20 rounds never seems like enough to find out how well a rifle will shoot. Part of the fun of these old rifles is handloading and seeing how well you can get them to shoot.

What's the OW in the diamond stand for on the butt of the M44? My buddies M44 has that cartouche. Manufacturer stamp?

That Polish M44 is one of the rarest M44's on the planet. Simply because of it's 1951 date. I think only a Finn marked M44 would be rarer. Very nice find!

Shoot the MAS. I have a M1936. Lee dies are not expensive, Bullets are standard 308. Cast works fine. Cases are now available or can be made from 6.5 x 55 which is what we used to do. My rifle is surprising accurate although zeroing for windage is a bit of a problem with the requirement to replace rear site inserts.

Thanks for the replies. I have not done much research on the M44 yet, thanks for the info. I have been trying to find out more about the MAS. The S/N on the reciever makes it 1953. The barrel is 1960 dated,the wood is not original, so it has been redone at some point. They made about 150,000 of the 36-51.

The M44 may stay in cosmoline if it's a rare year of production. Keep telling my wife that these are investments and not an addiction.

the wifes seem to stop beleving us when the gun safes are full and we are not selling any
