Sako .308 Black Bear vs .308 Grey Wolf?

Or the pictures were taken at different distances from the weapon.

I don't think so. I think owlowl is right. I will measure it when it gets here, but if you look at his pic with the red lines, you can clearly see that the pictures are well calibrated to one another. The end of the receiver, front sight, barrel band etc. all align perfectly... That's the whole point of him posting that picture, to prove that there is no 3D(rifle)--to--2D(image) variance between the two pictures.

Also the grizzly has a reportedly longer 14.5'' LOP and the BlackBear 14'', his picture seems to confirm this difference as well...

owlowl we both think alike, we make for some pretty good internet engineers and our CAD software of choice= MS Paint!

1) The scale is practically identical, you can see that barrel width and size of the front sight are identical:

(I think they have a standard setup of camera and rotating support to make pictures of guns and they don't touch it. Overwise it wont match that closely)

2) Also you can see how 2 bears compare to bavarian carbine, which is known 20 inch barrel:

bearvsgrizzly_4_zps7c3d505c.jpg

  • Line 1 and line 2 matches exactly on all 3 - same size as it should.
  • Line 3 matches exactly.
  • Line 4 is obviously the barrel length. So you see that Grizzly matched with carbine from start to the end of the barrel does not match as it should (21.25" vs 20"). But Black Bear matches the carbine, which means that it is also 20 inch.
  • Line 5, 6 and 7 on the bear and carbine are exact match and they should as they are in S action.
  • But line 8 of the carbine does not match bear, but matches perfectly with grizzly. Meaning that black bear has shorter length of pull than carbine.

Such that, we can conclude that in fact soviets have deployed missiles to Cuba... I mean Sadam has the bomb... grrr I mean that

Black Bear in 308 should have 20 inch barrel, not 21.25" and it is shorter than bavarian carbine, so it has to be shorter than 40"

or which is also an option - all pictures and pdfs and specs on Black Bear are messed up or they make/made different models and changed the specs quietly but left old pictures/pdfs.

LOL
I was faced with the exact same decision, even to the calibre, and ended up with a Bavarian in 6.5 mm.
I must be fickle

buddy,

They are both beautiful rifles. If you mainly do range work id get the langer barrel for accuracy. If your a hunter id get the shorter one for handiness. Im jealous :)

My 308 black bear is here :rockOn:w:h::rockOn:

I will post pics and range report once I find base and rings for it. I can confirm that the barrel does indeed measures 20'' and the specs near the bar code on the box confirm it. Wow the rifle really blows me away. When the rifle is shouldered, it's really impressive looking off to the side and staring down at the massive and stubby fluted bull barrel. The Sako catalogue picture really gives you a sense of what I'm talking about.

I think this rifle really covers a lot of bases for my needs;

Great BlackBear rifle; check
Great Deer rifle; check
Great Hog rifle; check
Great brush gun; check
It's also capable of taking a poke at Boo, Elk, Moose and even taking a poke at the scout rifle type crowd of people
I'm hoping to add ''fun target rifle'' to that list as well, given it's varmint barrel and .308 caliber. I first have to take it to the range though and confirm this.

Thanks for your help finding a store with one in stock Thk. I challenge anyone to find another .308BlackBear in stock somewhere...Something tells me I bought the last available one.

Seriously nice rifle! Ever felt the need to scope it?
I have yet to scope my Bavarian carbines. Lately though I've been tempted to purchase a nice 1.7-10x42 Swaro for medium range stuff.

I already have a scope for it. A Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50. I'm planning on fitting the rifle with a detachable scope mount for quick and easy access to the iron sights.

I finally got around to taking some pictures. Let me know if my picture uploads don't work...
Installing the QD Talley rings was not particularly difficult, but it's not the easiest system to install either. I don't recommend them for uber beginners. I'm glad with the final look of the rifle. I need to get around to doing a range report next.
