This new round will be a success for sure. If there is one thing that sells, it is more power!! It develops 625 more fps than HMR shooting 20 grain bullets (make sure you compare apples to apples here and don't compare with the HMR 17 gr bullet) This is a HUGE velocity increase especially in these small cases.
As for cost, it will be roughly the same as .223 reloads. P&D announced that the winchester stuff will be 19 bucks a box, and my guess is when the hornady stuff comes out you will be able to find it for 17 a box. Midway has it listed for 15 a box, so figure 2 or 3 more bucks up here. So about 35 cents a round, OK, thats 5 cents a round more than your 223 reloads. For the guy who doesn't relaod its half the price of decent factory223 that will shoot as accurately.
I love reloading, but often I don't have the time for it. If you are retired that is another story and I envy you. At these times I can see myself grabbing a box of this 17 wsm when I don't have any 223 loaded up and want to get out for a quick plinking outing, adn want something more exiting than 22 lr. I was planning on getting an HMR but why would I now when I can get 625 fps for an extra 3 bucks a box?
The fact is most of the average gun owners out there don't reload (and most of them aren't on this forum) and most of them would only shoot what, maybee 500 rounds a year? Likely more like 100 or 200. So for an extra 10- 30 bucks a year over the HMR they get the latest greatest super 17 rimfire zapper. And they can buy that savage for $375 and it will likely be the most accurate rifle they have ever owned (partly because they can shoot it well with no recoil)
I find this new round to be the biggest news ever for rimfire, when has a completely new, bigger rimfire case ever come out since the .22 mag? HMR and HM2 were just necked down existing cases. They have something completly original here and it will sell like hot cakes, probably replacing a large percentage of HMR sales
