Hey all.
Looking for any good pet loads for 45-70 marlin 1895 (22" barrel) 300 grain Hornady HP. If you have the info velocity and/or energy at the muzzle would be great. The load has to be reasonably accurate and meat Yukon bison hunting specs of 2800 ft/lbs.
Thanks in advance
Todd

by my calculations, you need a load of at least 2050fps to make that with that light of a bullet.

are you sure you want a HollowPoint?

I have heard they are soft.

I found this on another site regarding Elk hunting:
weeelllllll crap, called up hornady about this bullet (Hornady 300gr HP), took all of a minute to get the answer I was looking for. The 300 grain hollow point was designed for trapdoor rifles and velocities of 1900fps-2100 fps. I asked specifically if it would be good for elk and got a definite "NO"

bison are big and tough.

Sounds like the 350 Hornday Interlock is in your future. Or maybe a Woodley Weldcore in 405 weight.
This Hornday bullet can be loaded over 55.0 grains of IMR 3031 and should make 2000 fps in your Marlin. But proceed with caution as this is near top end loads for a strong lever rifle such as yours. This handload should meet your needs very well if your rifle can safely handle it IMO.
I have loaded differing 400s-405s in my 458x2inch American and had really small groups at 100 yards many times, using 50.0 grains of the IMR 3031. I cannot remember the velocity though. I'm thinking it's between 1600-1700 fps. This through a 21inch barrel. The OP does not nessecarily require a heavy bullet, but an adequate bullet with stout construction. Another good one would be the 300 spire point in the Barnes X-bullet all copper construction. A bit harder to find and generally expensive, but still a good investment though if you don't mind single loading a pointy bullet directly into the chamber of your otherwise empty, tube fed lever rifle. Reloader 7 is another good powder for these various short 458s. I suspect you'll generally get higher velocities than you would with the IMR stick powders. But I have not played with this one enough yet, to say one way or another. Please keep in mind I shoot these all in an FN-K98 Mauser, so my tolerance of recoil forces is my only serious hurdle, so to speak.

Ya I am getting that alot. I think i will have to go to a harder bullet. Too bad. I picked these 300s up locally with the good to go word form the kids at the shop. I guess I should have looked into it first. Oh well $27 waited, could be worse. I have traditionaly loaded 405 speers with 51.5 gr 3031. This gets me about 1700 fps......2500 ft lbs. Not quite enough. I guess I will have to look into a 350 rp. Thanks guys.

Just this meat buck at 75 yards trailing a doe with the 300gr HP .He ran 50 yards and laid down.Through and through......Harold
*Clipped him a little far back ahead of the diaphragm taking the back of both lungs. But he was moving through the poplars.

one in the chamber AND only ONE in the mag, for a two shot!

not wasted

save them for whitetail hunting. They work excellent for them!

or send them to me, and I'll use 'em

Balance accuracy + comfortable recoil instead of going for speed. After all you're throwing bricks .A 45-70 with some loads has more recoil than a .338 win mag.I'm not interested in 50ft lbs of thump with a curved hard plastic butt plate.
