Hornady GMX

I have a little experience with the 30 cal 165 gr GMX in a 30-338. These bullets are quite accurate but do not open up as much as the TTSX bullets do. Probably the difference between the pure copper of the TTSX and the harder "gliding metal" of the GMX. The plastic tips on both bullets are very similar and act as a wedge to promote expansion when it hits something.
 
Tried a fer barnes bullets out and am not impressed at all. I am really wanting to try the gmx in the 30-06. When I find some around here I will give them a shot. Every other hornady bullet I have tried is very accurate.
 
I've heard a lot of stories about Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets sometimes don't get along with a certain rifle/barrel for unknown reasons. They work really well most of the time but when they decide to not work well they work quite poorly. My Rem 700 300WM loves the 180gr TTSX for accuracy and that's the only one I've tried. Haven't hit anything living with it yet though (maybe next season :().
 
I gather you want to keep the speeds up with the gmx as they don't seem to expand very well at lower velocities. I think it's Hornady's website that has the deformation pictures on the GMX page at different velocities. If I recall correctly you want impact speed to be above 2100fps or so where most other bullets are 1800fps. Even then it didn't look like that high of expansion. So from what I gather they work better at magnum velocities or on heavy game.

That said I have a friend who has used them successfully out of a 270 win.
 
I will be using them in fairly heavy cover so impact velocities should be @ 2500FPS. Keep the reviews coming I still have lots of time to choose another bullet if needed.
 
I have a smoking load in my Vanguard 300 WSM with the 165 GMX.
It chronys 3200+ and shoots under 1 moa, [Reloder 17]

BUT....I have not shot any game with it yet, so maybe this coming fall.
I think they would be best in a larger, tougher animal [Elk]

We'll see. If I shoot an Elk with one, I'll report on here about it.

I also run the 300wsm with the same combo, shot two animals so far, first one was a double lung at 400y, pencil hole wound channel...bit of a chase but it did the job. The second one made full contact with the heart and opened the bullet up better. No chase on that one, and it was at about 550y. They are my go to bullet now...they are match accurate...or so I've found.

I use them in my 7mm-08. They shoot great with accuracy at .75" or less. Taken 2 deer with them but yet to recover any of the bullets. Less fowling which makes cleaning quick and easy. I also shoot them out of my 30-06 and 338.
 
Was bugging me a bit so I tracked down the image I was thinking of. I know it was on Hornady's website somewhere but I couldn't find it there. As you can see the bullet seems to be tailored for higher velocity performance. Not a bad thing but good to know when shooting at 'normal' velocities.
