Will these wear out barrels faster than standard jacketed lead core bullets? I never shot surplus ammo so I am not sure if it is safe to shoot in standard hunting guns. Just wanted to know before I prematurely kill my Ruger.

the steel doesn't actually contact the bore so I wouldn't worry about it just make sure the bullet diameter matches fairly close that of your barrel(slug it to be sure) my 2 cents

Oh, I thought steel core means steel bullet and either copper washed or just a copper jacket so there would be the steel to bore contact.
How is Norinco 223 ammo?

That would be a steel jacketed bullet. Steel core is just that , steel in the core , and it may be copper jacketed or steel jacketed and copper plated. I've seen surplus combloc ammo that was copper jacketed, lead filled steel core .

This...if you are gonna shoot surplus be prepared to clean your rifle after every range visit. What caliber will you be shooting just for curiosity sake?

223 in my 581 mini-14 ranch. Canada Ammo sells the Norinco 223 in brass cases non-corrosive primers. I do want to do volume shooting but I don't want to wear out the barrel with crap ammo as this is also my varmint hunting rig.
