Hi,
I thinking about getting an XCR-M .308 for hunting (deers & wolves). However I would like to know what should I expect to deal with regarding the perception of other hunters . Should I prepare myself to be seen a as redneck? Would it be better to just get something like a Benelli R1?

Thanks!

Seriously? If you want it, buy it and use it.

You shouldn't care what others think about the gear you've chosen to hunt with.

expect to get hassled the CO's and RC's on account of the looks of that gun.

Although I understand why you are asking this question, it really is your decision. As for me, I have always been very selective about who I hunt with, and my buds will be pumped that I am using an XCR-M .308 for hunting this year and they will probably want one themselves. As for the others, well its a great conversation piece out there and a great chance to sway some of the Fudds if you go about it the right way. So unless you plan on gearing up like a mall ninja and doing combat maneuvers while hunting :ninja:, I say go for it and enjoy it. Just keep a sharp eye out for those assault deer!

I have hunted with M305s, 180Bs, XCRs and preferably with a classic green. People of all types often ask all kind of questions. Bottom line, it's legal. I follow the magazine capacity requirements as well as caliber requirements in the appropriate WMUs. It's important to get out there and exercise your black/modern (whatever you wanna call it) rifle. Its good to ask questions here and do homework of your own. When you're afield, educate those whom you encounter, and have a responsible, safe and lawful good time.
On and don't forget to report back here with your successes! Despite my lack of hunting time this winter, I bagged two yotes last season ;)
Cheers

Go for it! Legal is legal!!!

Cheers

I bought an XCR-M specifically for hunting. Going to be selling some bolt action, and lever guns shortly...

The ergonomics of these modern styled rifles are amazing. She's a little front heavy, but you are able to stay on target when firing in rapid succession. No drifting upwards.
Not much recoil, and fun to shoot.

As for when or if I encounter a CO, I'll be polite and show my licenses, and if he has a problem with the rifle, he can call in and find out it is non-restricted. Then I'll say have a nice day, and continue on my merry way, with a wicked sweet rifle slung.

I'd be cautious about magazine restrictions. Not sure about QC laws, but lots of places have rules for 3 rounds only when it comes to big game.

Dude you have never hunted a day in your life. The only such restriction is for shotguns while hunting migratory birds. Please stop...

You're right, that's my bad for confusing migratory bird with big game.

There are however rules about 5 round magazines for semi-auto rifles in the Alberta Hunting regs and many US states. That might not mean much for someone using an XCR-M in .308, but it could mean a hell of a lot for someone using a Kriss Super V in .45

"It is unlawful to: set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting big game:
ammunition of less than .23 calibre,
ammunition that contains non-expanding bullets,
an auto-loading firearm that has the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine,
a shotgun having a gauge of .410 or less,"

NOt that many years ago, in a land that seems so far far away, before the dark ages of bill c-68, Canadians were allowed to hunt with rifles such as a HK 91....other hunters you meet in the bush would not say anything but you could tell they were dying to ask. I don't think hunters have changed much over the years.
cheers and happy hunting!

Good to know about Alberta's mag rule as it would apply to 7.62x39 pistol mags...

You would have been right if hunting one of these:
