Hunting with a modern rifle

I hunt with my XCR-L in 223 and/or 6.8SPC never encountered a CO while carrying it but every hunter I have come across wants to check it out and think it is extremely cool especially when I tell them that I am legally using 10 round pistol mags.

If I had the cash I would score a XCR-M in a heart beat unfortunately the 5 year old roof on my house that I bought 2 years ago needs to get replaced this year it leaks like a freaking sieve and no I can't find the people I bought the house from or the guy that roofed the house.

its legal, buy one, have fun and educate peoples on how just because it has a pistol grip and no wood its not a machine gun.

If that's how the law is worded, I could see that being a problem. An XCR does have the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine, when you're using pistol magazines. This doesn't mean you WILL use pistol magazines, but it "has the capacity" to do it. Leaves some room for interpretation, which is what makes lawyers rich in criminal court. They're making it sound like the firearm is what determines the magazine capacity, ignoring the fact that a magazine could be changed. I think the law was written with fixed magazine semi-automatic hunting rifles in mind.

Having said that, I'm sure if you only bring a five round magazine with you, the issue of what the gun "has the capacity" to hold will never come up.

EDIT: I just realized that you're using .308... There's no .308 XCR pistol magazine, so this will be a non-issue... It'll have to be five rounds, right?
 
I hunted with my XCR-M all last year, it was pretty cool and all but I found after a while it really started to get heavy and awkward to sling, probably want to use the 5 round mag that comes with it for carrying through the bush. I was using a padded Vickers, maybe a proper hunting sling might help.

Liking those kel tec RFB pic's, I just picked up a tavor and really digging the bullpup setup now...
 
I killed my first deer ever with my Swiss arms this year with iron sights and a hand loaded 55gr gmx.
With irons. (Man is good to go for any center fire on big game btw)

Best feeling ever, and all the training and familiarity with my rifle paid off, shot the deer right through the heart!
 
Do it. Nothing wrong. Just don't mall ninja up in tactical gear. Just treat like any other rifle and it'll be fine. If anyone questions, it's your chance to practice and promote the use of "black" rifles. Change the perception of fudds, general public and any officer not aware of our laws.

It doesn't matter what mag it could have, it matters what mag you have for the hunt; load a 5 round mag when going out and that's it, you're not using anything else.
I had a CO check out our hunting party last year, I was out with my RFB, no issues.
 
I know this will sound dumb, but what is with the no Mall ninja stuff? Is it not legal for hunting?

It's not a legality thing, just a practicality and maturity thing. You can wear a chest rig that holds 8+ mags but do you plan on missing that much? A mag or two in a simple belt pouch with a pocket or pouch full of loose rounds is simpler, lighter and won't interfere with stalking and shooting positions. Foregrips were designed for accurate continuous fire which is, hopefully, not what you plan to do while hunting. So on and so on. You also look like a soldier wannabe which requires a different mindset than hunting and shows a rather childish behaviour. If OP wants to be taken seriously, he keeps that stuff to the battlefields, ranges, sandpits and mirrors.

Personally, if you decide to use mall ninja stuff for hunting, fine. Chances are though, you'll find them to be quite a burden instead.

It's refreshing to see a reality check around here every once & awhile. I've hunted with my XCR in 6.8 SPC & loved it with a single point sling & optics. A couple of 5 round mags & enough blase orange to satisfy a C.O. and your good to go. If you need all five rounds to get your game, well...

I agree but tactical does not alway mean tacticool. I hunt with my DA grizzly mag, its a cheap not best qualaty or most reliable shotgun. But wen your hunting partridge while driving in a suv or side by side its way faster to insert a 5 round mag then to load 5 individual roumd in a good old 870. Easier to walk in the bush with a 27" bullpup rfb then a 26" barrel Remington 770.

all this to say that yes having a forgrip , 10 mags on you knee pad and a bunch of tacticool stuff is often useless and a unnecessary burden on you but carfully planed modern equipment can really be helpful and useful.
 
That's my point: It's hard enough to look at & not laugh at Rambo at the range. The rifle or shotgun really wasn't what I was talking about. A shotgun with a mag 'road' hunting makes sense to me. A guy with a tactical vest, eight PMags & a helmet to break his fall? Does not...

Not every province requires the bright orange...

As for vertical grips and such, what a bunch of horse manure. If it allows you to shoot more comfortably than go for it. Don't be a fudd and tell others how to hunt. Personally I like the less is more philosophy when hunting but to each their own. As long as they are taking their kills within the rules and doing so as humanely as possible you should shut the eff up. Jeesh...

2nd paragraph is not directed at anyone posting, just a general comment.

I don't think hunters have changed much over the years.
