Hi,
I just purchased a new takedown 10/22 and was surprised with how "mushy" the trigger is compared with my older 10/22. I'm sure its due to the fact that I've shot thousands of rounds through my old one and this may be corrected in time, but it got me to thinking about getting a replacement trigger. I've located two types so far the Volquatsen and the Timney triggers.

Does anyone have any recommendations about these, or any preferences?

Thanks

I don't have any experience with those but I do have a do it yourself mod document that was sent to me by another gun nut. Haven't tried it yet but he said it worked well for him and best of all no cost just a little bit of elbow grease and basic tools. If you want I'd be happy to email it to you. Just pm me your email address.

I installed the VOLQUARTSEN drop in hammer kit into my takedown about 6 months ago, best $42 incl shipping i could have spent.
Trigger is light, maybe 3.5lbs.
Purchased from Brownells, sku # 930122010WB

For less than that you can get David's Tier 3 trigger job at Brimstone... I would recommend the Tier 2 job or the Canadian Special on the Tier 1 job for $99... David does incredible work, easily betters my VQ TG2000's and right there with my RT's and Kidd's.

I've used (and currently own) both Timney and Volquartsen drop in units. They both deliver a nice pull of about 2.5 lbs. I slightly prefer the feel of the VQ but Timneys are easier to get.

Another good option is to send the factory unit to Brimstone Gunsmithing. For about $100 he'll tune, polish and lighten the pull. I've got one of his trigger jobs and am very happy with it.

if you want a trigger that has almost no travel and the lightest trigger pull (i think a little over 2lb) and crisp at the same time. get a Grandmasters power custom trigger kit from High caliber service. they are crazy triggers.

I've used the Clark custom trigger (from Brownells) in two different 10-22s. The trigger return spring seems rather weak (doesn't always reset the trigger) so I've kept the factory spring in both rifles. Works like a charm in the rifle I've kept - I'm assuming the new owner (shuffle shuffle) of the other rifle is as happy with it now as he was when we made the trade.

What is the turn around time to getting your trigger job done when you ship it to Brimstone Gunsmithing?

It was about three years ago that I worked out the Canadian Special Tier 1 job with David... at that time he had not done any Canadian triggers... I was so impressed with the initial trigger from Brimstone that I have had him do half a dozen more for me, and I do my best to promote his services... he is a real quality guy and does an amazing bit of work. He has reported that his turn around time is 7-10 days now, from the time he gets your TG until it is back in the mail... factor in about 7-10 days shipping each way and you can count on your trigger being gone for about a month... this is a good time of year to send it out, but that is what many are doing... so I expect David is pretty busy... you should note that the Tier one job comes with the hold-open mod and an RT full width trigger as part of the package, you can also get an RT push or pull mag release at the same time... I have sent dozens of shooters to Brimstone, I have never heard a bad report back.

I'm sure they do great work, but I'd say it's a shame that guys are shipping 10/22 trigger groups to the US just to have them tuned and the pull lightened... 1 month turn around is an awful long time, considering how much work is involved... Any CGN members who are reading this thread, feel free to PM me, as a Canadian gunsmith I do the same, or very similar, tuning and bring the trigger weight down to 3-3.5 lbs, perform auto bolt mod, for a very reasonable price (75$+ shipping) and very short turn around (2-3 days)... Every 10/22 (SR22)customer of mine is 100% satisfied.... Was at the range last week, met a couple new shooting buddies who had 10/22s, they shot my personal test rifle and were so pleased with the feel of it that I left the range that day with their guns... Returned them a couple days later and the next weekend they let their friends try out the new triggers and now i have a couple more new customers... And no ridiculously expensive parts to buy... Everyone seems to know about the nasty factory triggers these rifles have and I read a lot of threads on here regarding how to resolve it, well I'm here to tell you that it can be done right here, in Canada (B.C), at a fair price and fast turn around and satisfaction guaranteed.... Just a PM away... Thanks for your time guys...
PS: this is in no way, shape or form an attack on Brimstone or the work they do, I'm just simply stating that I have been doing the same (or very similar) work, locally, for some time now, have had only positive feedback... So it sounds like a lot of you out there would appreciate my work and I know I would appreciate your support...

he quotes about two weeks turn around after he receives it. I sent mine and it took a week to get there, he emailed me on the 5th saying that he got it. and now I wait until he emails me again saying its been shipped.....

Just do your own trigger job. It's well worth the afternoon spent doing it... Not only do you get a crisp light trigger with an adjustable sear and overtravel adjustment, but you also gain the knowledge of the inner workings of your trigger group. There's tons of write-ups on how to do it... just take your time and be careful. My 10/22 trigger went from terrible to awesome and there's no way I'd pay someone $100 to do the exact same thing to it.

The one thing I did pay someone to do was my bolt work... google Que's 10/22 bolt work. Awesome pricing, great work and reliable customer service. I can't justify doing my own bolt work for the price he charges.

Its always nice to hear guys who are interested in learning and tinkering, i agree being able to do your own work and seeing/feeling the benefits is a good feeling and accomlpishment... however... the reality is that not Everyone is capable or willing to get in there and do their own work, so as happy as i am for you that you were able to do your own work please dont devalue what others do with your comments, saying you wouldnt pay for the work is fine as your opinion but it really doesnt help anyone else's trigger woes.... some poeple can work on their own cars too, but doesnt mean they are mechanics or can do the same quality of work....

Is it really that good? I could definitely be interested in getting my SR22 nicer...

I just ordered a Competition Trigger kit from HiCal and will try installing them on my SR-22. Then I can compare their work to the stock components, try a little tuning myself and then install those components on my 10/22 TD. Be interesting to see how close I can get my trigger job to the feel of HiCal's - and if I screw it up, then at least it was an extra set.

I don't know you and have never seen your work... I like to keep my business in Canada whenever possible, so I hope some folks try out your work and report back... but don't "dis" David's turn around time... the guy is a super hard worker and does hundreds of trigger jobs every year... the Canadian special he does includes top RT parts and gets his special attention for $99... what exactly are you providing for $75??? David got my triggers down to 2 lbs with better break than my TG2000 groups... he is established and provides a quality trigger... perhaps you do too... how long have you been doing 10/22 TG's? How long have you been in business? How many 10/22 TG's have you done (approximately)? Do you provide guarantees on your work? Do you have a website? Just because you are Canadian doesn't mean you know what you are doing.

I have a dozen Que bolts and TG's from just about every manufacturer including Brimstone and I have done 3 or 4 dozen DIY jobs... I have no problem paying for a quality trigger or trigger job... sure you can do your own, but it takes time and can render your gun unsafe or even inoperable... glad you had some luck with yours, I have had good results with many of mine also... I also FU'd a couple... BUT, my best DIY was not as good as David's work... I wonder how many really good triggers you have compared yours to???

This pair have Que bolts and TG2000 groups;

My daughter's Pinky build has a Que bead blasted bolt and Brimstone's Canadian Special Tier 1 job, along with Gun Candy's top notch anodizing (Dale is a superb guy also; daletr on RFC);

First of all, i was not "dissing" his turn around time or questioning his integrity or his abilities, which is exactly what you are implying in your response... i made that post because i have read countless threads on this subject and wanted to give the community some food for thought since there seems to be an awful lot of folks shipping TGs across the border and no one in canada offering this service... as far as My work goes, it speaks for itself, there are dozens (not hundreds)of 10/22s and SR22s out there that have my TG work done to them, with nothing but positive feedback, i do not have a web page and i am not a full time gunsmith, i am a journeyman mechanic and have been for 10 years, so i have a day job but i am educated in the firearms field, have worked on firearms of all types, including 10/22s and 10/22TG work for 4-5 years and i do know what im doing, despite being canadian, lol,maybe i am not as established as some but we all have to start somewhere.. now you are the one who is questioning My integrity and putting me on the spot, I'm sure David at Brimstone doesnt mind another gunsmith trying to get some local business, im sure he keeps quite busy with all the customers he has in the US and i am not even a blip on his radar, i can only hope one day i can be that successful, as far as my price goes, on the Brimstone website he clearly describes his work and the differences between my work and his are the RT parts he installs, which i could also do but costs would go up, and i dont beleive the improvements provided by removing all take up and overtravel are as noticeable as the rest of the trigger work, maybe in a precision rifle but not a 10/22, at that point its more about technique and not fancy parts, beleive me, in the end they are usually short barrelled rifles (refer to the pics you posted) and are chambered in 22lr! most people will never shoot them beyond 150 yards, just saying, so i dont really push the adjustable sear and trigger overtravel screws to most customers since they will never know the benefits, the hammer and sear tuning are similar as he does not replace parts he just knows how to tune them to the right fit unitl the correct trigger weight is acheived, i usually go 3-3.5 lbs because its a huge improvement over factory without being too low, not that i cannot bring the weight lower, thats just usually where i draw the line unless the customer requests lower... being in america i'm sure he pays alot less for those parts and they are a lot more readily available, also being more established and experienced with a full time shop he can charge less, period... i work out of my shop at home, on my spare time, by myself... would it make you happy if i charged less? what do you want me to say? none of my customers have ever complained.... i am going to stop now and apoligize to everyone, this is NOT why this thread was started so i dont need to sit here and defend myself to you... nor do i need to, or wish to, compare myself to a well established full time American gunsmith such as David, as i am still in the growth stage.... but i assure you i do not apprecate my credibility and skill questioned by someone who i dont even know, when they are trying to defend someone who i was Not attacking...i can only hope as many people take me up on my offer as possible so i can grow my business and get my name out there, that way the work will speak for itself and none of this "battle of the posts" BS will be required.....
