Personally I could never have just one, so detail as many as you want. If you have pictures show them without restraint and brag away if you already built it. Bragging without pictures will be ridiculed and mocked without prejudice.

Currently I am blessed with a healthy stable but have some "holes missing".

Next build I can dream up is as follows:

Stalking 9.3x64 Brenneke
Mauser 98 with Rigby-ish bolt handle
Gentry 3-pos safety
Blackburn #21 bottom metal
MPI stock heavily altered by Mitch Kendal with red Decelerator and brown speckle paint
Custom contour Heym 9.3 barrel 23"
NECG banded front sight with folding hood
Talley Steel QD rings and bases with peep
Timney trigger @ 3lbs
All metal rust blued.
This rifle would be fed nothing but 286gr Barnes TSX and Solids. Likely it would get a Leupold 1.5-5x scope.

What's yours?

I'm toying with a .270WSM and .416WSM switch barrel set-up. Just got to decide if I get the sensible Mod70 Extreme Weather stainless and synthetic or the more traditional Mod70 Super Grade wood and blued. The .416WSM barrel would be 19"-20" with a NECG banded front sight and express rear. This combo should do for almost anything that can be shot.

Has anyone heard of or worked with a 416 WSM? This would simply be a 300 WSM necked up to .416 with a slight reduction in case length to account for the shortening effect of the neck expansion. COL could go to 3.1" to match current magazine length in the Winchester short actions.

The case would hold 66 grains of water with a 300 gr Hawk Bullet, delivering over 2700 fps and 5000 FPE at 65,000 psi. AA 2230 would do the trick, without compression.

A deep seated 400 gr Hornady or the like would still leave 52.5 water grains of usable capacity, delivering 2230 fps and 4425 FPE.

Best of all, these velocities are all readily achievable from a 20 inch bbl.

These sound like big numbers, but they are very reasonable. I have worked with the 416 Rem Mag for over 10 years, and driven buckets of 300 gr Hawks 2950 fps using R15 with no pressure problems from a 22 inch bbl. The loss in case capacity going to the WSM works out to a modest 8% drop in velocity when the 3% increase in efficiency is added for the short, fat case.

The 300 gr .416 bullet has the same SD as the 165 gr .308 (.248)and is a legitimate 300 yard proposition. Reduced 300 gr loads will duplicate the 375 H&H at 2550 fps with less recoil. The 400 grainers have a SD of .330 and a TKO of 141, 41% higher than the 375.

The 416 WSM has the same case capacity to bore ratio as the 458 Win Mag, which thrives on AA2230 with no load compression. My 22 inch 458 drives 500 grain bullets over 2200 fps with no pressure problems using 2230.

Hawk can build custom 250 gr HPs with an SD of .207 for reduced loads for deer, mimicking the 375 with 210 to 235 grainers.

Dressed out, the associated rifle would qualify as a "Super Scout" with a forward mounted scope and even an 18.5 inch bbl threaded for a removable brake.

Anybody want one of these? I do!!

Can't find any pics of a .416 WSM, but here's one with a .350RemMag and .350WSM

The closest pic I can find is the .416B&M, just slightly bigger than .416WSM.

I am looking forward to seeing this one, when complete. I bought the dies, and reamer but chickened out and built the standard version.

It is about the only AI cartridge I would build. Sometimes I am tempted to change it yet.

Keep in mind that the factory and book loads for the .250 Savage are limited to a very mild 45,000 CUP (lower than the .22 Hornet!), whereas I am sure the hot .250 AI loads are right up there with the .22-250, which has a max SAAMI pressure of 65,000 PSI.

So yes, there seems to be a disproportionate gain (vs case capacity), but I believe if you compare apples to apples there really isn't that big of an advantage. For example, consider "old" standard pressure loads for the .257 Roberts and the 7x57, and compare them to modern +P loads. You get a significant jump in velocity without the hassle of fire-forming or expensive dies.

I thought you were a cut-rifle type of fellow!

Preferably sure, but I have my reasons. Heym's steel quality and real world stress relief if a little different than NA type barrel making. Given the folks that recommend it, I'll trust it.

At least you didn't call me a half-cut type a fella!

Other than finishing off my black/gray laminate butt stock for my T/C G2 Contender carbine I plasn on ordering a black/gray laminate stock set for my stainless T/C Prohunter with shortened to 22" s/s Prohunter barrels in 30-06 & 375H&H that I put together last Oct/Nov I wasn't planning any kind of a build this year.

I been doing two things for my cabin fever trying to spend what little spare time I have working on my loads & figuring out chokes/loads for 12 gauge shotgun coyote hunting -> then I saw the pic of the 458 B&M WOW that would be fun to play with.

Already completed. A custom 22" 6.5x55 Shillen sporter(No 3) barrel. Rem 700 long action, in a camo stock. Detachable AI mag. Mix in Northshore Barrel's skills.

And you get a gun that, at 100 yards, was on the target in two shots and hitting the bull in six. I am still working on a load but it is very accurate.

I keep thinking that I should be doing a ultra-lightweight 7mm-08 Mountain rifle type build. Not sure why as there are no mountains here, btu that's what's caught my fancy lately. No surprise, I suppose, that I have a Pre-64 Long action magnum boltface donor in the safe right now.
