Cooey 60??

This nice old tube fed .22 LR has no markings on if (no model or serial number at all) other than "Special" on the left side of the receiver toward the rear, and "REPEATER .22 CAL" on the top of the receiver. The parentheses are mine. What iteration of the model 60 might this be? The magnificent walnut stock I have repaired and refinished. Thanks.

FWIW, when I got the rifle there was so much lead fouling that I was only able to push the brush half way down the bore and then had to pound the rod through the rest of the way. Didn't damage anything, of course, but the lead literally sprayed off the brush as it exited the muzzle for the first 10 passes. I've seen dirty bores before, but I doubt anything will ever top this. :)

I was told by a gunsmith that it's an early incarnation of the model 60, probably made around 1917, but I'm not sure what his source of information is.

Thanks for the reply and the excellent picture. Mine is identical to yours, except for the "Special". Your walnut stock is exceptional too I see. Very nice indeed. Does yours have a serial number? I find that to be the most unique aspect of the rifle. I think I see a thin metal butt plate on yours too. People on this site are truly a wealth of knowledge. Thanks again, 9.3.

Dont think any had a # until teh 50's isn i believe. My 60 doesnt have one either.
 
If a Cooey Special repeater, it should have hand checkering on the pistol grip and forearm. Cooey did very little hand checkering and guns with it are not easy to find. They predated the model 60 and were introduced around 1934. The "repeater" (without special) did not have the checkering. Some had fluted forearms.
 
Mine has no number or maker's name... just Repeater .22 cal... and it does have a thin steel buttplate.

And you gotta love the "good old days" when they used a nice piece of walnut on a cheap, ordinary .22... and no sarcasm intended.

Cooey was produced in Canada and not subject to the laws of the U.S. if they were not exported from Canada. In all the time I have been interested in firearms, I have rarely seen any serial numbers on anything other than the 84/840's, 600's and the later 64's.
 
Not to belabour the point here gents, but mine is the 'special', but with a plain walnut stock (i.e. no checkering). It would seem that it could have been made at any time over a fairly broad time period in Cooey's history. No real way to zero in on it's DOM I guess. Very interesting info on the serial number question though. I wonder how these were registered in the bad old days of the registry. Anyway, I am being told, by some, that I have a very nice/common $100 rifle here. I guess I won't be able to retire by selling it then? :)
 
If it is a plain stock then it has been replaced. The reason it was the "special" was because of the hand checkering and the bit of a higher grade walnut stock. The straight repeater that was also available at the time did not have the checkering. That was the difference between the 2 models.

They mailed out a sticker with some numbers on it for you to put on the gun.

this is cgn after all you could price it 3x over what they are worth. It might sell. It seems to work with 10/22's lol
 
Not certain about the "special" models...n'er laid eyes on one. The ones marked "repeater" were made between '31 and '39. They predate the model 60, but are very similar. I haven't seen one of these with factory taps on the side for scope mounts. Also the stock is shaped slightly different. Rounder at the pistol grip.

...it does look much better now.

I haven't met one that still retained a bore that couldn't shoot really, really well. With Cooey-fever getting stronger everyday, it should fetch more than 100 bucks.

You are wrong. Well I guess I shouldn`t say that cause I have not posted my 10/22 on the EE, but hey...if someone needs one bad enough.....I have a stock 10/22 carbine and I`d let it go for exactly what I paid for it. I put maybe 20 shells down the pipe. Bought it on Feb 16th/2013. Paid 263.99 after taxes. That is what I want, you pay shipping. Now there is an honest deal that isn`t marked up 3x!!

Although better than 3x, you're still offering a used gun for the fair price of a new one (plus shipping)...it should fit in the EE quite well.

Its also not listed in the ee is it? You could easily ask 350 and someone would probably pay it lol.

Oh ummm crap....did I say I ran shells through it?...ummmmm I mean`t my other rifle. The 10/22 is brand new. ;) There is no way any buyer could ever tell this gun has been fired.

Really?? One would think that since the seller should be the person owning the gun, that they would know if they have shot the gun. Perhaps however a buyer would not know....

LOL... had to comment, couldn't let that one slide! ;-)
